Reviews Summary

Cross Hill Quarry Nature Reserve is praised for its beautiful walks, great views, and peaceful atmosphere, offering a lovely escape on the edge of town. However, some visitors have noted that maintenance, particularly grass cutting in open fields, could be improved to enhance the experience and address issues like dog waste.

"It's such a beautiful place with lovely walks, but it's been spoilt, unfortunately.
The grass isn't mowed across the middle of the big field, so children can't play there (not that you'd let them atm). Hence why it's turned into a massive dog toilet.
If the grass was kept short, the dog walkers could actually see where their dogs had left little presents. It might encourage them to pick 💩 up..............just saying."

Exploring the Nature Reserve

Cross Hill Quarry Nature Reserve is a disused quarry that has been thoughtfully transformed into a valuable green space for the local community. It offers a network of paths that provide opportunities for relaxing walks and enjoying the natural environment. The reserve connects several underused green spaces, stretching from the Nelson Golf Course across to Marsden Park, making it a significant area for local biodiversity and recreation.

Visitors can expect a mix of terrain. While some sections boast brand new footpaths, others remain more natural and potentially uneven. This variety adds to the charm for those seeking a genuine outdoor experience. The views from the higher points are particularly noteworthy, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. It's a place where nature is slowly reclaiming the industrial past, creating a unique and peaceful atmosphere.

Despite its beauty, some visitors have noted issues with maintenance, particularly regarding grass cutting in open fields, which can impact usability for activities like children's play and unfortunately lead to an increase in dog waste. Responsible pet ownership and adherence to park rules are crucial for preserving the reserve's appeal for everyone. The presence of wildlife, though not exotic, adds to the charm for nature enthusiasts.

The 'great views' and the 'good surface paths' are frequently mentioned as highlights, making it an accessible spot for a 'relaxing walk' on the 'edge of town'. The transformation from a disused quarry into a pleasant natural area is a key draw for many.

However, recent feedback indicates some concerns about the upkeep of certain areas. The unkempt grass in the main field has been a point of contention, impacting its use for recreation and, as a consequence, leading to issues with dog waste. This feedback suggests a desire for improved maintenance to fully realize the reserve's potential as a family-friendly and pristine natural space.

Despite these challenges, the reserve remains a cherished local amenity. The 'peaceful wildlife' and the 'new footpath' contribute to a positive experience for many. It's a place that offers a breath of fresh air and a connection to nature, even within an urbanizing landscape.
