Reviews Summary
Visitors find Croy Hill a peaceful spot for a walk, appreciating the historical significance of the Antonine Wall and the potential for beautiful views. However, many note that visible Roman ruins are scarce, and the experience is heavily dependent on clear weather.
"My visit was 28/05/22.
A long walk up to the Fort but worth the views once you get there.
Not many people know about the Antonine Wall, built by Antoninius Pius (Marcus Aurelius' adopted father), Hadrian's adopted son.
I took around 70+ photos of the views (i'll add a few dozen here) and it wasn't easy to recognise the ancient Roman ruins, as the place has changed alot ... the main example being the massive Quarry to the south, which is a scar in the landscape.
Still worth a visit though."
David J. McGlone
"Good place for a walk, unfortunately it was very foggy when I was here so had no views to take in. If visiting don’t expect to see any Roman ruins as any remnants are long gone."
Brian Muir
"Beautiful, peaceful walk."

The Antonine Wall: A Roman Frontier
Croy Hill is a significant location along this ancient frontier. While the visible remains today are often subtle, they represent a crucial part of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The landscape has changed considerably over the centuries, with features like the large quarry to the south impacting the original topography. Despite this, the site offers a tangible connection to Roman military strategy and the challenges of defending the empire's borders.
Visitors are encouraged to appreciate the historical significance of the earthworks, even if they aren't as visually dramatic as stone fortifications. The walk up Croy Hill itself is often highlighted as a rewarding experience, providing a sense of the terrain the Romans navigated and defended. For those interested in Roman history, it's a valuable site to explore, especially when combined with an understanding of its context within the broader Antonine Wall.
Navigating Croy Hill: The Walk and the Views
When the weather cooperates, the views from Croy Hill are a major draw. Visitors often describe sweeping panoramas of the surrounding Scottish landscape.
