Timing is Everything: Tide Times are Crucial

The Elie Chain Walk is a coastal adventure best tackled at low tide. High tide can make sections impassable and dangerous. Always check local tide tables before you go to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Reddit

Know Your Limits: It's More Than Just Chains

While the chains offer support, this walk requires confidence, physical strength, and some hiking/climbing experience. It's not suitable for very young children due to potential drops and the need for long stretches. Reddit

Some snaps from the Fife coastal path (Tayport to Elie, not in order)

My wife, mother in law, and I plodded along 30 miles of the Fife Coastal Path in August. The weather was pretty glorious the entire time. We had a cottage in Cupar, so took buses out to the start point and each day. Day 1: Kingsbarns to St Andrews Day 2: Tayport to…

Reviews Summary

The Elie Chain Walk is a highly recommended, adventurous coastal trek offering stunning views and historical intrigue. Visitors praise the unique chain sections and dramatic scenery, though caution is strongly advised regarding tide times and the physical demands, making it unsuitable for young children. Reddit

"Amazing walk, from the start to the end will keep the kids happy. The caravan park you go through at the start is a hidden Gem and looks phenomenal also. Be careful with little ones as could be dangerous but we loved today"

"Love this walk, the chain has been renewed since the last time we were here and if you get the weather it can be fantastic, the views and the world war 2 bunkers and anti-tank blocks gives you an image of what the soldiers must have been thinking. We prefer walking out to Elie Caravan park having a coffee and lunch in the cafe then walk back over the top side of the hill for the views."

"We had an amazing time on the Chainwalk! It was challenging but very fun! A little bit of a walk to find the start but all part of the adventure!
Be sure to check the tide times and go within the low tide range to stay safe from the waves.
Also, know that there is no safety harness so, if you fall, you fall. There are some very high drops so a good deal of confidence and physical strength is needed. I'd also wish to say it's not suitable for young children, mainly because of the lack of safety harness, but also very importantly there can be some big stretches needed to reach the foot holds and little legs may not manage! The chains can also be a little slippy to hold! Honestly, I'd say children as young as 10 may manage but I'd be more inclined to say 12+ just for safety.
The views along the walk are outstanding and the environment at times feels otherworldly with jagged rocks and deep caves.
It's just pure adventure and I'll definitely be returning!
Highly, highly recommend!"
