Newquay to Porthtowan
Hi, I’m planning on walking from Newquay to Porthtowan this week on the South West Coast Path. If I’m starting in Newquay, do I have to get a ferry to cross the water? On the map it doesn’t look like there’s a crossing that avoids trekking back inland. Thanks!

What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Fern Pit is lauded as a hidden gem with spectacular views and exceptional seafood at its Beach Kitchen. Visitors rave about the fresh ingredients and unique dining experience, though some find portion sizes for certain dishes could be more generous. The charming ferry crossing adds to its appeal, making it a highly recommended destination for a memorable coastal outing.
"We booked a table as we heard it was popular. My daughter informed me that we can't be late or we'll get charged £35 per person. It wasn't that busy so we didn't have to book. My wife's hot chocolate took 25 minutes to arrive. Food was great, tasted wonderful and was very well presented. The 4 of us were happy but I will say the chicken and chips I had, although delicious it only had 2 slices of chicken and a small cup of chips with a overly large shredded salad. I was disappointed in my potion size. Only 2 (that we found) but nice and clean toilets. Small car park at the front, a large pay and display car park 5 minutes walk away. Fantastic views."

"WHAT A FANTASTIC, AMAZING MEAL!!!! What more can I say?! Here lies a true gem of Cornwall, nestled away on the outskirts of Newquay, overlooking the Ganal. With stunning views of the river to the sea, green trees and people enjoying a happy day on the beach, you feel the true relief of being on holiday and free from the strains of everyday life. Then, comes the food, which was absolutely incredible.
We ordered a wide selection and nothing disappointed. From the crab, prawns, oysters and chips, you are hit by exquisite flavour on each bite. To anyone going, I would recommend the crab claws and rosemary and garlic chips for dipping. It is a pairing to delight everyone with buttery, herby flavour to delight the soul. It is clear their chefs are worth every penny.
Speaking of which, for anyone concerned about price, i cannot say it will be a cheap meal, but i can say it is food worth the price and that is something i am willing to pay for every time.
The service was lovely and everyone was friendly and knowledgeable and it was clear they were supportive of work experience opportunities which is always a nice community feeling. Overall, if you want a day by the beach, a place for good food and then to relax by water, sand and the sounds of laughter and joy, It is the perfect place to take anyone you wish. They even have a doggy dinner option so all people are welcome and it's the perfect place to share a good meal ….unless you have cats 😂😂😂.
As a famous restaurant critic said in a beloved mouse movie “I will be returning…hungry for MORE!”"

I can honestly say the catch Cornish Hash I had is THE best meal I have ever eaten! ( no exaggeration)
Make a point of finding this cool little gem hidden down a footpath which leads you to the steps leading down to Crantock Beach!
