Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Gaer Hillfort for its stunning panoramic views and historical significance, particularly enjoying the connection to the Sirhowy Valley Walk. The site is noted as a great dog-walking area. However, some find the ascent to the fort itself to be steep and overgrown, which can be a challenge.

"I started from No 30 bus stop by Tredegar park, crossed the Ebbw and walked through a housing area, uphill following part of the well sign-posted Sirhowy Valley Walk.
The main path that skirts the hill is a good surface for cycling, walking. Turn off the main path and climb quite steeply uphill to reach the remnants of the strategically placed and overgrown iron-age fort. Likely this was one of those assaulted by Ostorius Scapula or Vespasian when ordered to quell the violent uprisings of the Silures, pretty much the most troublesome tribe in these islands.
Great views, probably better panoramas in winter when trees have shed their leaves.
Continue back downhill to rejoin path and the fourteen locks walk.
Map is from the journal Archaeologica Cambrensis, 1913."
