TIL About Jack Phillips, the 25-year-old Godalming-born telegraphist was aboard the Titanic when it hit an iceberg on April 14, 1912. He stayed at his post until the ship sank, frantically contacting nearby ships, in an attempt to save hundreds of lives. His body was never found.

Am reading this in Godalming. There is a memorial garden to him here that has roses in and a pond. It’s very nice. Another interesting Godalming fact. It was the first town in the world to have public electric street lighting

"Beautiful park and surroundings, views and bandstand.
As a Titanic fanatic, I found this to be very interesting, vowing the memorial of Jack Phillips, the brave crewman who sent the ongoing SOS messages when the ship began to sink. The town itself is beautiful, perfect for cafes and craft shops. Lovely."

Harriet Rhodes

"Quite a large memorial for a person I am afraid not many outside of the local area will know or remember. But fitting to the memory or of all those unfortunate in the sinking of the Titanic. A beautiful setting and well kept and well used grounds"
