What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Golden Hind replica for its historical accuracy and immersive experience, making it a hit with families and history enthusiasts alike. While some note the steep steps and potential for low head clearance, the affordable admission and engaging digital guide are frequently highlighted as major positives. It's considered a well-executed and educational attraction.
"I spent more than an hour exploring this museum ship, and found it to be both educational and fun! Bought my ticket at a little kiosk just in front of the ship, where you can also buy themed souvenirs. Admission is £8.95 for an adult, £6.95 for a child or a senior, and a family of four can get a combined ticket for £24.95. The tour is self guided, but there's an optional audio guide included in the price of your ticket that you can play on your smartphone, accessed via a QR code on the ship. I boarded the Golden Hind - a replica, but a very convincing one! - along a gangplank. It's a well constructed vessel with cannons, artefacts, and furniture specially created to look just how the originals would have looked. Some good audio-visuals, waxworks, and interactive displays. There was lots of printed info about Sir Francis Drake's adventurous life and voyages, his crew, the food they ate, medical treatments, punishments, piracy, and the unbelievably harsh conditions they endured on board. Be aware that you'll have some steep steps to climb to get to the upper decks and Drake's cabin, and some even steeper steps to negotiate to go down below decks where you'll also have to mind your head. There are fantastic views of the town and harbour from the upper decks, and wonderful photo opportunities! I liked the fact that I could explore the ship at my own pace. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit, and learned a lot about both Drake and this fascinating period of our history. Definitely worth a look!"

"I was initially reluctant to come aboard this ship as I thought it would be gimmicky and lacking any sort of integrity, however, this was quickly dispelled soon after boarding and seeing that it’s actually very well put together!
The digital guide is indeed in depth, the below decks are well made and you do genuinely get a sense for what it must have felt like.
It now has an Airbnb attached to it as well which seems like an interesting stay!"
