What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the magical sunset views and scenic beauty of Hackpen Hill. The iconic white horse is a unique sight, though best appreciated from a distance. Parking can be a challenge due to limited space and the presence of campers, and some find the horse's visibility requires a good vantage point.
"We had a magical experience here on Friday 20th June, we watch the sun go down over the plains into the Summer Solstices"
Pete Reid
"Really nice place to visit, parking an issue as its teaming with our 'free spirit' friends parked, camping etc everywhere. Roads in are good no issues there. Best view of the white horse is from the road in, stop at one of the sidings to snap a picture. There is a main trail path leading in both directions across the crest of hill, so good for cycling too. Only 4 stars as the masses which have congregated there made me feel uneasy."
Martin Jones
"Beautiful place with scenic views. The drive up the hill reveals such a beautiful landscape. There’s a small parking area here. I’d say on a busy day you can get around 20 cars parked here.
The walk from here to Barbury castle takes around 30 minutes, it is lovely especially during clear skies and sunset.
You’ll always come around other walkers, runners and cyclists."

Understanding the White Horse
Unlike some of the more famous white horses, the Hackpen White Horse is often described as being best appreciated from a distance, with some suggesting it's most clearly visible from an aerial perspective. This unique characteristic means that while you can see it from the road, truly grasping its scale and artistry requires a broader viewpoint. The surrounding landscape, characterized by rolling plains and open skies, complements the visual impact of the chalk figure.
Navigating Parking and Access
To mitigate parking issues, arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon is often recommended. Alternatively, visitors might need to park further down the access road and enjoy a short walk to the site. The roads leading up to the hill are generally good but can be narrow, so driving with care is advised. The experience of seeing the horse is often enhanced by stopping at sidings along the approach road, allowing for unobstructed views and photo opportunities before reaching the summit.
