Hartland Point Lighthouse in Devon. The only lighthouse I’ve visited that doesn’t have a light in it 😱 The optic was stolen from storage while being renovated in 2022. Said to be one of only 3 in the world and worth £1m, sadly it looks like the light won’t be operational any time soon. Light or no light, this is still one of my favourite pieces of coastline. What do you think? 🔥

I found Hartland Point Lighthouse so you don’t have too! 📍Bideford Built in 1874, the Grade II listed lighthouse marks the passage between Lundy Island and the Devon Coast. It’s not open to the public. It was a bit of a comedy skit if I’m honest… Parked up (after 20 minutes of driving through narrow, twisty country lanes) and put my walking boots on. This lady drove up in a 1970s rusty Rover, ...

However, many express disappointment over the lighthouse being closed for renovations or inaccessible due to safety concerns, with some feeling the parking fee was not justified when the main attraction was unavailable.

"Stunning cliffs and geology. Chevron folding seen in the bays, with this lighthouse nestling near the base of a cliff adding scale to the majesty of the coastline. £3 to park all day nearby, (April 2025) with a short walk to a viewing area, or farther along the coastal route."

keith Gannon

"Lighthouse is shut and the area blocked due to unsafe cliff face. Saw the mushroom though!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Significance of Hartland Point Lighthouse

Hartland Point Lighthouse was constructed by Trinity House in 1874. Its primary purpose was to guide vessels navigating the treacherous waters approaching the Bristol Channel. The station was once manned by four keepers who resided in attached cottages with their families. These cottages have since been demolished to make way for a helipad, reflecting the site's evolving operational needs. Instagram+1

Sadly, the lighthouse's operational light is currently non-existent. The optic, a valuable component worth an estimated £1 million, was stolen from storage during renovations in 2022. This theft has left the lighthouse without its crucial light source, and its future operational status remains uncertain. Despite this, the structure remains a significant landmark on the North Devon coast. Instagram

The lighthouse is situated on a dramatic headland, part of the 'Wreckers' Coast,' a testament to the historical maritime dangers of the area. Its presence underscores the importance of maritime safety and the enduring role of lighthouses in guiding ships through challenging seas. Instagram

Exploring the Dramatic Coastline

The coastline around Hartland Point is renowned for its stunning geological features and rugged beauty. Visitors often marvel at the unique chevron folding visible in the bays, a striking example of geological forces at play. These formations add a dramatic visual element to the already majestic scenery. Reddit

Numerous coastal paths offer opportunities for exploration, providing breathtaking views out to sea and along the dramatic cliffs. These walks can be invigorating, though visitors should be prepared for strong winds, a characteristic feature of this exposed location. The paths can be steep in places, so sturdy footwear is essential for a comfortable experience. Instagram+2

While the lighthouse itself may be inaccessible, the surrounding natural landscape provides ample reward. The sheer scale of the cliffs and the power of the ocean create a truly memorable experience. Keep an eye out for local wildlife; some visitors have reported hearing seals. Reddit
