Reviews Summary

Hartshill Castle is a site rich in history, offering glimpses of its medieval past through its motte and manor house ruins. Visitors appreciate the historical significance and the beauty of the surrounding woodlands, though access can be challenging due to muddy conditions and restricted areas. Reddit

"A motte and bailey castle standing in a strong position possibly built by Hugh de Hardreshull in the time of Henry I. During the reign of king John, William de Hadreshull is recorded repairing the castle. The castle was in the hands of Robert de Hadreshull when he was killed at the Battle of Evesham and the castle fell into disrepair and was abandoned. Of the earlier castle only the motte remains but in around 1330 John de Hardreshull built a fortified manor house of which many of the walls remain today, I can find no record of a Licence to Crenelate for this building. In 2000 someone carried out an archaeological excavation but with any supervision. Sadly the castle has been placed on the "at risk" register due to constant vandalism. It is on private land but there are many footpaths with which you can view the castle remains including the motte."

"A place rich in history, Henry VII stayed here and it was a lovely place to visit. Can get quite muddy so be prepared as it’s all overgrown too but a beautiful place to visit. Lots of exploring to do and the main structure that’s still standing is the fireplace."

SPARKELS7797

"Couldn't get into the main ruins as it was closed off due to the ground being very very wet after all the rain. Best to go in the warmer drier months.
The woods surrounding are great though."
