"A hidden gem about a 20 minute walk from Old Rectory car park. The view over Dunsfold aerodrome to the South Downs is fantastic, and the woodland walk to reach it is lovely, particularly in the evening with the sun coming through the trees. The circular trail around the hill finishing in the village is good for dog walks, with plenty of shade in summer.
Beautiful bluebells cover the wooded hillside in late April, making it one of the best times to visit. The trail is steep in places and can be muddy after rain, so take robust footwear. It's worth having a look at the stone circle down the hill while visiting - it's not ancient, but is quite atmospheric."

Andrew Thomas

"The views from the ridge make the steep climb worthwhile. Very muddy in winter and after wet weather making some of the pathways treacherous but great in fine weather. The woods are carpeted with bluebells in the spring and it is definitely worth a visit then. There are several public footpaths that run along the top of the hill, around the hill and cross it so plenty of places to explore. Sadly no benches as a sit down at the top would be nice!"

Susanne Knowles

"I'd give it 5 stars but I just learned dragonstone circle was erected in 1990 so I feel a bit hoodwinked."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating the Terrain: Mud and Footwear

Hascombe Hill is a beautiful natural spot, but its charm comes with a caveat: mud. Visitors frequently mention the treacherous and muddy conditions, especially after rain or during winter months. Reddit+1 This means that robust footwear is not just recommended, it's essential. Think sturdy walking boots with good grip rather than trainers. The steepness of some paths can exacerbate the slipperiness, making a fall a real possibility if you're not properly equipped. Reddit

Despite the potential for muddy boots, the woodland walks are a major draw. The trails are well-trodden but can be uneven. For those who embrace the slightly wilder nature of the terrain, the experience is incredibly rewarding. The circular trail offers a good way to explore different aspects of the hill and its surroundings. Reddit

When planning your visit, checking the weather forecast is key. If there's been recent rainfall, be extra prepared for muddy conditions. However, even with the mud, the views from the ridge make the effort worthwhile for many. Reddit

The Seasonal Spectacle: Bluebells and Beyond

The timing of your visit to Hascombe Hill can dramatically alter the experience, with late April standing out as a particularly magical period. This is when the wooded hillsides are carpeted with vibrant bluebells, creating a breathtaking natural display that draws many visitors. Reddit The sight is often described as stunning and well worth the trip. Reddit

Beyond the bluebells, the evening light offers another beautiful photographic and atmospheric opportunity. As the sun filters through the trees, it casts a warm glow, making the woodland walks particularly enchanting. TikTok This time of day is perfect for a more tranquil experience, with fewer crowds. Reddit

While the bluebells are a highlight, the views from the summit are impressive year-round, weather permitting. The panoramic vistas over Dunsfold aerodrome towards the South Downs are a consistent reward for the climb. Reddit Even in less vibrant seasons, the open countryside and the atmospheric woods offer a peaceful escape. TikTok

The 'Dragonstone Circle': A Modern Marvel

A unique feature of Hascombe Hill is the 'Dragonstone Circle', a stone circle that adds a touch of intrigue to the landscape. However, it's important to note that this is a contemporary installation, erected in 1990, rather than an ancient monument. Reddit This distinction is important for visitors seeking historical significance, as one reviewer humorously noted feeling 'hoodwinked' by its modern origins. Reddit

Despite its recent construction, the circle is described as quite atmospheric and provides an interesting focal point for photographs. Reddit It's located down the hill from the summit, making it a worthwhile detour during your exploration. The circle, along with the surrounding natural beauty, contributes to the overall charm of Hascombe Hill. Reddit

For photographers and those who appreciate unique landmarks, the Dragonstone Circle offers a distinct subject. It's a testament to how modern art can integrate with and enhance natural landscapes, creating memorable experiences for visitors. Reddit
