What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Gladstone's Library is highly praised for its unique atmosphere, extensive book collection, and the peaceful environment of its reading rooms, making it ideal for study and writing. While the library itself is a major draw, some guests found the accommodation basic and the dinner offerings bland, though the cafe and breakfast generally receive positive remarks.
"Reading rooms are cosy and beautifully silent. Perfect for studying as well as research using the library itself. You need to apply to be a reader to use the library services, just bring some photo ID on your first visit and there's a suggested £5 donation when you get set up.
The on site cafe (food for thought) has excellent food with a local menu and very reasonable prices. The Welsh rarebit jacket potato is a lovely twist on a classic.
Staff always super friendly and helpful but Peter was especially lovely today. Apologetic for the tiniest wait (literally under a minute) and someone you can tell really loves his job and customers."

"Reading rooms are stunning. Wide range of materials. Peaceful and comfortable. Very helpful staff.
The library provides a number of excellent spots for any writing or reading.
We were a couple. One of us was using the library and the other used the space for a quiet weekend break... read and did some craft work.
Bedroom was basic, but pleasant.
Breakfast was good. Dinner was a bit disappointing. Food was very bland it's like they'd forgotten to add sauces/bases... maybe they did?!
Either way, we came for the library, not the food or the room, and the library was fantastic."

"We stayed for a night and had a great experience. The library is amazing and contains so many interesting texts. The reading rooms are a treat for any researcher or reader and all staff are helpful and informative. The lady on reception made us feel very welcome and explained how we could plan our stay. The room was also lovely, large and airy. We had a room with a private bathroom. We had to cross a corridor to use it but had our own key and it was also huge. The food is also great and the best part is you can take books back to your room. Loved it...."
