🧿🎃 Did you know you can go pumpkin picking at a farm near Slough?? Actually, I’m quite sure you do know… but in case you didn’t, this is Copas Farm in Iver (literally on the same road as Langley Country Park) 🌾 It’s so so lovely and calming here, a real countryside vibe. We loved our afternoon here with my whole family, the kiddies with the cousins. So cute. The pumpkin fields are gorgeous, and lo...

Reviews Summary

Haymill Valley Nature Reserve is widely praised as a 'little gem' and a valuable green space for the Slough area. Visitors appreciate the opportunity to see diverse wildlife and enjoy the natural, unmanicured woodland and marshland. While some wish it were larger, its charm lies in its accessible, natural state, maintained by local volunteers.

"Great local nature reserve. Have seen deers, squirrels and a wide range of birds - great for taking children exploring. The paths round the edge have been recently rebuilt and are kept clear by local volunteers"

Daniel Bradley

"Lovely little piece of woodland/marshland slotted between housing and the Slough trading estate; it is really a little gem that will provide any visitor with a nice stomp around for an hour or so. Quite a few bits to explore, if you pack up the right shoes/boots of course.
This is not "National Trust" herding on concrete path, it's definitely a bit rough in place (especially away from the main path) but well worth it.
The woodland is clearly pretty well maintained, and apart from the typical detritus from clueless visitors, it is in pretty good nick. The small stream (the Millie) has been extensively cleaned recently, and there is a lot of work done on copussing and maintenance.
I'm lucky to live next door, and I've spotted there countless songbirds, but also Owls, Woodpeckers, ducks, faisants, Egrets, bushy tailed foxes, muncjac deer and I probably forget a few."

Michel Pollet

"Little Gem, not much green around slough so to find this was exciting for me and my kids. Can explore the woods and look for certain bugs/birds. Great for doing scavenger hunts and to get the kids more interested in nature and outdoors. In the rain it even has a mini waterfall which is just lovely. Pretty and simple. My only wish is that it was bigger. But for the area really is a hidden Gem."

Exploring the Natural Landscape

Haymill Valley Nature Reserve is a delightful pocket of nature nestled between urban development. It's characterized by its woodland and marshland areas, offering a varied terrain for exploration. The paths, while recently rebuilt in parts, are intentionally kept natural and can be a bit rough, especially away from the main routes. This lack of manicured paths is part of its charm, offering a more authentic wild experience compared to more managed parks. Reddit

The reserve is home to the Millie stream, which has undergone recent cleaning efforts. After rainfall, this stream can create a charming mini-waterfall, adding a picturesque element to the landscape. This natural feature makes visiting after a shower a unique experience. The overall upkeep is managed by dedicated local volunteers, ensuring the area remains a pleasant space for visitors. Reddit

While the reserve might not be vast, its size contributes to its 'hidden gem' status. It provides a perfect setting for a leisurely hour-long walk, ideal for those seeking a quick nature fix without a long journey. The blend of woodland and marshland supports a diverse ecosystem, making it a rewarding place for nature enthusiasts. Reddit

Abundant Wildlife Encounters

One of the most significant draws of Haymill Valley Nature Reserve is its surprisingly rich wildlife population. Despite its urban surroundings, the reserve is a haven for numerous bird species. Visitors frequently report spotting a variety of songbirds, and more excitingly, owls, woodpeckers, and pheasants. Reddit

Beyond avian life, the reserve also supports mammal populations. Keep your eyes peeled for bushy-tailed foxes and the elusive muntjac deer, which have been seen within the reserve. The marshland areas are also attractive to waterfowl, and egrets have been observed here too. This makes Haymill Valley a fantastic location for birdwatching and general wildlife observation. Reddit

The natural, less-manicured environment is key to supporting this biodiversity. The presence of the Millie stream and the varied vegetation provide habitats for insects, which in turn support the larger animals and birds. It’s a testament to how even small urban green spaces can thrive with a little care and protection. Reddit
