Visiting at the end of August I have to say that the garden was perhaps not at its best, but it was certainly very interesting to look at the wide variety of plants able to grow in what is quite an inhospitable location.

The Legacy of Gertrude Jekyll
Her designs often featured long, flowing perennial borders, meticulously planned to create a sense of movement and visual interest throughout the seasons. Jekyll's approach was deeply rooted in her artistic background, understanding color theory and light to create immersive and evocative garden experiences. The Gertrude Jekyll Garden on Holy Island, designed in 1911, is a testament to her enduring vision, showcasing her ability to create beauty even in challenging environments.
Jekyll's writings, such as 'Colour in the Flower Garden' and 'Wood and Garden,' remain seminal texts for gardeners and designers. Her emphasis on the sensory experience of a garden—scent, texture, and color—continues to inspire. The Gertrude Jekyll Garden on Holy Island, though small, embodies her principles of thoughtful design and a deep connection with nature.
Holy Island's Unique Environment
The Gertrude Jekyll Garden was designed to be a sanctuary within this exposed landscape. Its high walls provide crucial shelter, allowing a diverse range of plants to thrive. Visitors often remark on how the garden offers a welcome respite from the elements.
Despite the challenging environment, the garden showcases a variety of plants, including beloved apple trees, demonstrating the resilience and beauty that can be cultivated with thoughtful design and dedicated care.
