"Holy Trinity Church in Llandrindod Wells is a Victorian construction, built to serve the increasing population.
Llandrindod's original medieval church was a small building, well away from the current town centre. It was nowhere near suitable for impending population explosion.
The 18th and 19th centuries saw huge population growth and massive numbers of visitors after Llandrindod Wells was developed as a spa town. The local waters were said to have healing qualities.
Land was donated by Edward Middleton Evans and the new church was built in 1871 by architect Thomas Nicholson of Hereford. Originally known as Christ Church, it was finally consecrated as Holy Trinity in 1881.
There was no full time rector at the church in this first decade. Part time clergy were appointed to coincide with the holiday and spa season in summer.
Outside of the spa season, parishioners chose to worship at the old parish church. In 1893, the old church was unroofed to force the congregation into the new church.
The church has been enlarged greatly since it's construction, now featuring a double nave and double chancel. The low tower was added in 1995.
The structure is a typical Victorian mix of Gothic styles. Both font and pulpit are Decorated, many of the windows are Geometric.
Striking features include the angel adorned hammer beams of the chancel and the wide range of late 19th and mid 20th century stained glass.
The church was the location of the first election for the Archbishop of Wales after the disestablishment of the Church of Wales in 1920. Each successive election has also occured here as the rough geographical centre of Wales."
Eliot Collins
"In 1893, Archdeacon Henry de Winton, who had responsibility for the area at the time, had Llandrindod old church and Cefnllys church unroofed in order to persuade the congregations to attend the new church in the centre of the town. Both churches were later restored in 1895 following protest."
