Reviews Summary

The Cornhill is generally seen as a pleasant, historic town centre square with a vibrant market and good amenities. While some visitors find recent renovations lacking in impact, others appreciate the fountain, surrounding historical buildings, and the variety of shops and eateries. The market, particularly on Friday mornings, is a highlight for many.

"A good, clean, open space in town centre with a great market 3 days a week. Recently spent a lot of money revamping it, but cannot see that it has added much value or improved it a great deal, seems fairly pointless?!"

Rae B

"Lovely square with water fountain surrounded historical buildings! Good choice of shops and eateries. Primark, M&S, Starbucks, Nero's, Greg's, all nearby. Love the fruit and vegetables market stalls on Friday mornings and other days too."

Angie B

"The Cornhill is Ipswich's town centre square, with a long history of hosting the weekly market. The name really says a lot about the identity of the town; Corn Hill, between the Cattle Market & Butter Market, summarises the agricultural recent past of Ipswich. It's got some architecturally ornate & interesting buildings, most notably the former main Post Office (built 1880), & Town Hall. The Town Hall has an interesting history, being the conversion of what was originally built as St. Millicent's church. However, subsequent development since the Boer War Memorial & Cabman's shelter were removed to Christchurch Park have shown far less imagination. Another central feature since removed, was the controversial Christmas tree sculpture, fabricated from welded spheres. After its very unpopular reception in 2012, largely due to its cost, at even further expense it was shifted over to Ipswich Waterfront, (where like much of the public works of art in the town, it appears thoroughly out of place). Nowadays it's poorly laid-out at ground level, with interim steps that act as an obstacle to pedestrians with mobility problems. The Cornhill becomes very busy at peak times, but is quiet in the early morning, when the buildings look by far the best with the aid of artificial lighting, (especially around Christmas when the tree is sited outside the Town Hall). The Cornhill has a very long history as the centre for public events in Ipswich, & in the 16th Century it was even the site for punishing miscreants. Several of the town martyrs named on the Memorial in Christchurch Park, were actually tortured & burnt to death here. Nowadays, The Cornhill attracts some of Ipswich's most VOCAL locals, especially those with megaphones, LOUDLY condemning those they consider "SINNERS"! If it was me using offensive words, & inciting HATE, I'd be arrested, but because the police are total hypocrites, these obnoxious Bible-bashing weirdoes are allowed to use their faith as an excuse to be homophobic, prejudiced, etc. The Cornhill also attracts a lot of rough sleepers in the sheltered foyers, but this had nothing whatsoever to do with the fatal stabbing there in January 2023"
