What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Keele University is praised for its beautiful, expansive rural campus with peaceful woodland walks and historic Keele Hall. While some find the campus isolated and facilities like the library dated, its strong Clearing performance and vocational courses, particularly in medicine and veterinary science, make it an accessible and appealing option for many students.
"When I was going to university Keele was the place one went to if nowhere else would accept you. How times have changed. The university is really going places and I can genuinely say that I wish I was going there....
The campus is lovely and range of courses is well suited to the modern age. Great that there is a vet school there now! Medical school is especially suited to current requirements. There is a foundation year that allows students to gain that extra confidence before starting their full degree. Impressive."

"The woodland walks are calm and peaceful. They may lead you to the memorial garden, the little lakes or just interesting paths.
The paths leading away from Keele hall towards the M6 reveal yet more lakes and streams and very interesting plantings.
I only had an hour so i need to return for further explorations.
The lakes hold a few birds and generally sit very well into the landscape. You have the constant companionship of the squirrels as they gather their harvest.
A recent discovery for me, and why did i not know this before, is the 10 year tenure of the Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich, grandson of Tsar Nicholas the 1st. His morganitic marriage meant he was exiled from Russia (4 previous marriage requests had been turned down) he landed at Keele hall renting from the Sneyd family.
His exile no doubt saved him from the fate of his 3 brothers, all killed by the bolsheviks following the October revolution.
If i can find out more i shall. I feel a story is in there somewhere as he became a local figure. He entertained Edward 3rd at the hall, unveiled a statue of Queen Victoria and became well known in his 'elevated' circles."

"One of the best spaces to be in while studying in the UK. Absolutely chilled, the people are very friendly and accommodating. Best experience every time I'm here."

The Keele Experience: Rural Charm vs. Isolation
While the campus offers a unique atmosphere, some reviews highlight areas for improvement. The library facilities are noted as being dated and undersized for the current student population, a point of contention for many. Similarly, the sports centre could benefit from modernization, with suggestions for an Olympic-sized swimming pool to enhance its appeal. Accommodation, particularly halls like Horwood, is described as average and dated. These aspects, combined with the distance to larger towns like Stoke-on-Trent, mean that students often spend significant time on campus, fostering a close-knit community but also potentially limiting exposure to diverse experiences outside the university bubble.
Despite these challenges, Keele University is actively working to enhance its offerings and appeal. Its strong presence in Clearing makes it an accessible option for many students, and the university is recognized for its biomedical science and computer science programs. The foundation year is also a valuable pathway for students seeking to build confidence before commencing their degree. For those who thrive in a natural, self-contained environment and value a strong sense of community, Keele offers a distinctive university experience.
Navigating Keele's Academic Landscape
The university's approach is often described as more teaching-geared than research-led, catering to students who prefer a structured academic environment. While some reviews point to challenges with the admissions process and course content perception, Keele's consistent presence in Clearing highlights its role in providing opportunities for students. This means that even if initial university plans don't work out, Keele often has places available, making it a viable option for those seeking a degree. The university is also developing its postgraduate offerings, with programs like MSc Computer Science and MSc Management available for further study.
When considering Keele, it's important to research specific course details and entry requirements. While the university aims to be inclusive, the demand for certain programs means competition can be high. For those interested in fields like Accounting and Finance or Business Management, Keele provides dedicated programs. The university's commitment to student support, particularly through its foundation year and Clearing process, underscores its mission to provide educational access and opportunities.
