Accessing Keiss Castle

Keiss Castle is a ruin, so access is limited. The best approach is a scenic walk from Keiss Harbour along the beach, offering views of WWII machine gun turrets and potential seal sightings. Avoid directions to Nybster Broch car park as they lead to a difficult and potentially private route.

Best Time for Views & Wildlife

Visit during daylight hours for the best views of Keiss Castle and Sinclair's Bay. Low tide can reveal more of the beach and potentially more seals. Early mornings or late afternoons offer softer light for photography.

Since the bots seem to love Keiss, here's a couple of drone shots from this summer. Built by the Sinclairs, probably late 1500s on the site of a previous fortification. The ruin is in a precarious state and part of it collapsed with the cliff. The overhead shot really demonstrates this.

Very cool, thank you!

Whenever I see a beauty like this I wonder how close it actually was to the cliffs when it was built, and just how much erosion and time have played their part

👀 Watch for seals

Keep an eye on the water and rocks for seals, especially at low tide. Reddit

💩 Mind the cow pats

If walking inland paths, be aware of farm animals and their droppings. Reddit

"As good as an old ruin can be. Lovely walk up from the harbour.. saw seals for the first time in the wild so us and the kids loved it."

LEE BULLCO

"Had a nice walk along to Keiss Castle today. We parked at Keiss Harbour and walked North along the beach front to the castle. Also seen the Machine gun turrets on the beach front on the way to the castle."

Glenn Young

"DEFINETLY A MUST SEE!!! You can reach the castle either walking on the beach or following the path that starts in front of some wooden lodges near a small parking lot. To reach the parking lot follow the "harbour directions" on Maps, NOT directions for the castle. P.s., watch out for cow poo!"
