"Arrived at the castle after looking on the website and it saying the opening times/prices.
When we arrived for just after 11am, the gate to the car park was locked, and had a sign saying ‘for Guided Tours only’. We were approached by a groundsmans (?) who asked if we were ok. We said we’d come to visit the castle, to which he said the castle is only open for pre booked tours, which were at 11am and 1pm. We were a bit put back, as nothing was mentioned on the website. We were allowed to walk round the grounds as that is open 24/7. Nor great if you’ve come a long way- luckily we hadn’t.
The chap also told us the castle status had been ‘down graded’ by the trust, and that opening hours had severely been reduced, and the cafe and shop taken away.
Just a heads up for anyone wanting to visit.
