Knowlton Church and Earthworks near Cranborne. Apparently it’s ususual to see a church built inside a henge, but the Normans decided to go for it anyway. It’s supposed to be one of the most haunted sites in Dorset but all we found were spiders in the walls and a gem poked in one of the cracks of the tower.

"I really enjoyed the peace and quite here. Luckily had the place to myself.
The Knowlton Church and Earthworks in Wimborne, Dorset, has a rich history that spans thousands of years.

Well looked after site and easy to access."

David Nurse

"Lovely and quiet with a surprise towards the back of the mound. Not much parking, it's roadside only but no one else was there when we got there. Also free to go look!"

Alan Brighton

"I'm not into strange spooky places but I'll say this, I went with a friend who is equally interested in history and both of us had an overwhelming feeling that I cant actually put into words. Closest I can say isn't was a feeling of dread, like something else was there with us. It was trimy strange, the feeling left us both as soon as we crossed the ditch and through the gate, this was broad daylight and absolutely no reason for 2 grown men to feel like this. Very odd place. Do check out lidar though if you want to see the Plague village its quite definitive on there."

A Tapestry of Time: Prehistoric and Norman Layers

Knowlton Church and Earthworks is a remarkable site where ancient pagan rituals meet medieval Christian worship. The most striking feature is the Norman church, built directly within the center of a large Neolithic henge monument. This unusual placement highlights a fascinating historical layering, where a new faith was established on ground already considered sacred for millennia. The henge itself consists of a large circular bank and ditch, remnants of ceremonies and gatherings that took place thousands of years before the church was even conceived. Instagram

Visitors often describe a palpable sense of history and atmosphere at Knowlton. The ancient yew tree behind the church, often adorned with ribbons, serves as a poignant focal point for remembrance and reflection, connecting the site's past to present-day human emotions. This blend of ancient earthworks, a ruined church, and a venerable yew creates a unique and deeply moving landscape that invites contemplation. Instagram+1

For those interested in the deeper history, exploring Lidar data can reveal even more about the surrounding landscape, including evidence of a plague village, offering further context to the area's long human habitation. Reddit

The open, rural setting and the ancient nature of the site contribute to a profoundly calming experience. It's described as a 'liminal space' where one can 'surrender, let go, and just be.' Instagram

However, some individuals also note a distinct and sometimes unsettling 'presence' or a feeling of 'dread,' even in broad daylight. This is often attributed to the site's long history of ritual and human activity. While not everyone experiences this, it adds to the site's mystique and is a recurring theme in visitor accounts.
