What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate Latchford Locks as a peaceful spot for walks, birdwatching, and witnessing the impressive ship lock operations. The connection to the Trans Pennine Trail is a major draw for outdoor enthusiasts. However, some feel the area could be more developed for tourism and lament recent changes to access, like new fencing, which have altered the traditional relaxed atmosphere.
"Nice spot to just sit and listen to the birds and the water flowing though leaks in the rather tired lock gates. Often sit there with the dog, sharing a sandwich and my flask of tea!
Update June 2022
The locks have now been ruined by the addition of metal fencing to keep you to the allocated walkway, so you can now no longer sit on one of the bollards/cleats as you could only a month or two ago and appreciate the location. Suddenly not a friendly place to be! Shame on you MSC."

"My favourite place to meet the sunset, very peaceful and meditative"

"Great destination for a walk or a bike ride. It is a pity that nothing is done to make the surrounding area a bit more touristic. And when a boat is coming a good way to explain the locks principle. A better maintenance of the lock is needed though"

The Engineering Marvel of Latchford Locks
The operation of the locks involves intricate systems of gates, valves, and pumps. When a ship enters a lock, the gates are closed behind it, and water is either let in or drained to match the level of the next section of the canal. This process can take a considerable amount of time, but the visual spectacle of a large cargo ship being lifted or lowered is captivating. While the primary function is industrial, the locks also offer a unique point of interest for tourists and locals alike, providing a glimpse into the ongoing maritime activity on the canal.
Recent changes, such as the addition of metal fencing, have aimed to enhance safety and guide visitors along designated walkways. While this may alter the experience for some who previously sat directly on the lock bollards, it ensures a more controlled environment for viewing the operations. The Latchford Viaduct, a disused railway bridge nearby, adds another layer of historical and visual interest to the area, often appearing in the background of photographs.
