Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Lennoxlove House as a hidden gem, highlighting its deep historical significance, intimate guided tours, and impressive collections, including the Hamilton Palace artifacts and Mary Queen of Scots' death mask. Many appreciate the peaceful estate setting and the knowledgeable guides, though some note that its limited opening hours and less prominent profile mean fewer visitors than it deserves.

"A Hidden Gem Steeped in History – A Must-Visit!

I had the pleasure of visiting Lennoxlove House yesterday, (13.07.25) and it was truly a memorable experience. Nestled in beautiful woodland just half a mile south of Haddington in East Lothian, and not so far from Edinburgh; this historic house is an absolute treasure trove of Scottish heritage.

The visit began quite intimately—I was initially the only person on the 1pm tour, which made the experience feel incredibly personal and exclusive. A couple of walk-ins later joined, and it was lovely to share the journey with fellow history enthusiasts. But honestly, more people should make the time to visit this remarkable site. It deserves far greater footfall than it seems to get.

Lennoxlove House dates back to the 15th century, originally known as Lethington Castle, and has been expanded several times across the centuries, most notably during the 17th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The architectural layers reflect its long and fascinating evolution, and each room tells a different chapter of its story.

What makes Lennoxlove even more special is the incredible lineage of historical figures connected to it. From the Maitland family to the Dukes of Hamilton, the house is steeped in stories that span politics, royalty, and cultural legacy. You can almost feel the weight of history in its rooms.

The guide U had was knowledgeable and passionate, and the setting itself—quiet, peaceful, and surrounded by nature—makes it feel like a true escape into the past.

If you’re even remotely interested in history, architecture, or Scotland’s cultural tapestry, Lennoxlove House is an absolute must-visit. I left feeling enriched, inspired, and slightly bewildered that such a magnificent place isn’t packed with visitors daily. Let’s hope that changes soon."

"A bit of a "hidden gem" fairly close to Edinburgh and easily overlooked, Lennoxlove House is well worth a visit. It's story spans many centuries and there's a lot of interesting historical items and paintings contained therein. The tour was fascinating, highly recommended (we took the "Ladies of Lennoxlove" tour), and informative. We would definitely return when we are in the area again."

Douglas Blakeley

"A beautiful historical house built in the 1300 owned by the Maitland family with strong Royal links. Bought by the Hamiltons in the 1700s also links to Royalty. Interesting tours with beautiful paintings and antiques to see. Worth a visit if you love History . As it's lived in the gardens are private but we must remember although it's open 3 times a week in the summer this is still a family home ."
