In 1998, the lighthouse was automated but still retains many historical features.
The Lizard Lighthouse is the second oldest operational lighthouse in the UK. The building is listed as a Grade II historic monument.
Unfortunately, we couldn't peek inside as it's only open on specific days, but it's worth visiting because the exterior is also incredibly interesting. Along the path from Lizard Point to the Lizard Lighthouse, there are spectacular views."

"Well. Where to start... we stayed in the Lizard lighthouse cottages. Amazing. Well appointed clean and highly recommended. There are multiple let’s, we had the “disused” tower, brilliant up there in a storm! The visitors centre was excellent and we were lucky to get on the tour of the working side of the lighthouse.
The views were amazing and good local pubs and people.
Also lucky to see the Lifeboat training with the local Coastguard Helicopter.
Be warned though. This is an operational lighthouse, that’s been keeping mariners safe for many years. It has a fog horn. It goes off when required. I loved it but the wife was less enthused. Ear plugs are provided!"
