What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Macclesfield Canal Towpath for its peaceful atmosphere, beautiful countryside views, and the charm of canal life with its many boats. The well-maintained sections are ideal for walking and cycling, and the presence of canalside pubs adds to the appeal. However, some users note that certain parts of the towpath can be muddy and potholed, requiring careful navigation and appropriate footwear.
"A lovely canal walk from Marple towards Macclesfield and great to see a canal busy with boats, too. The only letdown was how muddy and potholed the towpath was in places. Most of it is perfect, but the more remote parts of the path don't seem to have been maintained for years. This was more than made up for, though, by the peaceful atmosphere and the stunning scenery. I loved this walk, but I will do it in a dry season next time!"

"Beautiful, peaceful day out with the family. Had a fab time walking by the canal. So many different types of barges and boats. Great for cycling, walking dog, horse riding, good for prams but be careful as the path isn't very wide so you will have to move to the side for cyclists. Views a breathtaking. Wild life is so beautiful especially seeing rabbit running around and birds will come close to take food from you. Had a fantastic day out. Will definitely go again"

"Well-cared-for canal passing right through Bollington and Macclesfield with excellent tow paths for walking or cycling through the towns and into some beautiful countryside. There are a few pubs, restaurants and cafes just off the canal if you need a refreshment break. The canal is very popular with boat users and there are marinas in both Bollington and Macclesfield."
