The house's unique design by the author himself and the insightful talks by knowledgeable volunteers are frequently praised. While parking can be a minor inconvenience, the overall experience is considered enriching and enjoyable, offering a tangible connection to a literary great.

"Max Gate is a wonderful place to visit if you are interested in Thomas Hardy. This is the house that TH lived in for most of his life and designed and had built by his father and brother. A comprehensive talk was given in the grounds which was interesting and very illuminating. Following the talk you are allowed to view the interior unguided, Volunteers are available in the house that are very keen to answer your questions or offer further insights. After viewing the house we explored the grounds further. On arrival there is no car park as such. There are some spaces at the end of the road and you can park along the verge opposite the front entrance."

"Worth a visit for sure. I should say I have little interest in the author but did find the visit interesting and enjoyable. Allow about 1-30m. Guided tour was very good thanks to the knowledge and manner of our guide Mary👍House is intriguing, lots of unusual details. Furniture is authentic for the period but not necessarily from the original house."

"Spent a lovely morning at #maxGate. The host on my tour was formerly a teacher and obviously a fan of Hardy. I learnt so-much more from him in that 30 minutes about Hardy and his love of Women and eccentric life. Especially the tale of the formidable mother Jemima. Definitely worth a visit, the house and grounds are lovely. I would set aside at least 90 minutes for a visit. I forgot to mention Nikki who says #SconeAsInGone, she was baking biscuits for the guests!"
