Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently impressed by the depth of history and the quality of restoration at the Medieval Bishops' Palace. Many find it offers much more than expected, with knowledgeable staff and engaging exhibits. While the ruins themselves are atmospheric, the guided tours and visitor center significantly enhance the experience.

"I turned up here on a day in Lincoln expecting it to be a nice half an hour, 45 minutes or so. No - I spent a good 2 to 2 and a half hours looking around the ruins. The little museum inside was interesting with the video tour voiced by a monk who sounded far too drunk - very amusing. The ruins aren't extensive but very interesting. The tracery of a buffet in one part is superb, as is that of an adjacent window. The barrel vaults of part of it are very long and although quite ruined, very beautiful. The restoration and cutaway-like roof of the kitchens is very interesting - parts look almost like they're new because of the restoration work. The new gardens are interesting and have a good idea and even better views - I liked the vineyard even if it was small and the wrong time of year. The garden could do with some trees however to complete the vision. One final thing to look out for is the tower by the entrance. The vault at the bottom is very impressive and modern-looking despite its age. The best part is that there is a small, almost hidden door from where you climb up to two rooms above and get nice views of adjacent rooftops through the windows."

"Lovely way to spend an hour or so next to the Cathedral. It's very atmospheric and has been tastefully restored without ruining the history. Great views over the city at the back. There are loos, a shop and coffee machine and a small exhibition with a video and information. The staff were amazing and one sat and went through all the badges (which members can collect) to make sure my son had a unique one. It made him so happy 😊"

"Much more to see than I had anticipated.
The site is fairly large with a small exhibition and shop in the visitor centre."

The Art of Medieval Scaffolding

The Medieval Bishops' Palace in Lincoln offers a unique glimpse into historical construction techniques. As highlighted by a TikTok video, understanding medieval scaffolding is key to appreciating how these grand structures were built. This involves intricate wooden frameworks, known as centering, used to support arches and vaults during construction. TikTok

One fascinating aspect of this is the use of putlog holes. These are the small holes left in the walls where the horizontal timbers of the scaffolding were inserted. By examining these, historians and builders can deduce the original size and complexity of the scaffolding systems used. It's a tangible connection to the masons and builders of the past, showcasing their ingenuity and skill in creating enduring architecture. TikTok

A Cat's Tale: Unexpected Companions

Sometimes, the most memorable parts of a visit are the unexpected encounters. At the 12th-century Bishops' Palace in Lincoln, one visitor shared a delightful experience of meeting a little black kitten custodian. This charming feline added a touch of warmth and personality to the ancient ruins. Instagram

While not a formal part of the attraction, these animal encounters can create unique and heartwarming memories for visitors. It highlights how historical sites can offer more than just stone and history; they can be living places with their own stories, sometimes involving furry residents. Instagram

This adds to the overall atmospheric and engaging nature of the palace, making it a place where history and everyday life (even that of a resident cat) intertwine. It's a reminder that travel experiences are often a blend of planned sights and spontaneous moments. Instagram
