What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mellerstain House and Gardens is praised for its exceptional Robert Adam interiors and beautiful grounds, offering a rich historical experience. While the guided tours are highly informative, some visitors find them lengthy. The estate's rural location means checking opening dates and potential cafe limitations is advised, but the overall beauty and historical significance make for a rewarding visit.
"A a unique Borders Mansion set in landscaped grounds designed by William Adam around 1725. Building stopped when the outer wings were complete and the central connecting block was completed 40 years later by William’s son Robert. The Robert Adam interior designs and décor are exceptional, especially the library. The house is still the family home of the Earls of Haddington and only open to the public on specific dates. There is a cafe, toilets and tours of the house with engaging local guides. Best check the website for details, but the interesting architecture and family histories make for a relaxing informative visit."

"Beautiful building and gardens. The lake aspect really stood out. Due to covid insurance criteria, one can't look around the house interior unless part of a guided tour. Therein lies the rub. It lasts 90 minutes, the guided tour. Unless you're genuinely interested in the history of the property and its previous incumbents, this feels like far too big an ask of tourists, who like a short mooch around a stately home. I declined the tour but would have accepted a 30-45 minute tour as a compromise."

"Stayed at the Clock House in the grounds. Fab walks around after 4pm when all other visitors had gone. Severe, rather boring facade gives way to gorgeous Adam interiors. The Hundy Mundy too is a hoot. Book me a plot!!"
