The Middleton Railway, founded in 1758, is the world's oldest continually operating railway, originally built to transport coal from Middleton Colliery to Leeds. It made history by being the first railway to secure an Act of Parliament for its construction in 1758. In 1812, it became the first commercial railway in England to successfully use steam locomotives. The railway was later preserved and ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Middleton Railway for its authentic heritage experience, highlighting the charm of steam trains and the well-maintained rolling stock. The historical significance as the world's oldest continuously operating railway is a major draw, with many enjoying the museum exhibits and the opportunity to ride the vintage locomotives. Some note the train ride is short, and the cafe's food offerings can be limited, with parking also being a consideration.

"This was a brilliant heritage railway to visit, with green steam trains pulling the classic red carriages! Wooden interior feels different and the style feels polished while well-maintained, railway runs to one stop where the train turns around. Green spaces are to be walked around here and the departure platform is grand in itself, with a pretty black and red hut. History is delved into of Middleton Railway as the world's longest running passenger railway with the old trains shown, it was fascinating that a couple even allow visitors to walk into the cabs! Stories are told of the trains being imported from countries like Denmark which is evident in their different designs and underground locomotives are demonstrated for how mines were once accessed, giant rail crane is outside of the entrance too."

"Great little railway only a short journey but great motive power plenty of locomotives in their collection my only criticism is that they have a fair size cafe but no food to speak also the railway isn't accessible by public transport"

Chris Payne

"Great day out. The train ride is quite short but once you've got a return ticket you can travel to and fro all day. My train had an open veranda at one end to watch the world go by, or be right next to the engine as it pulls the train. The museum has lots of exhibits really well presented and explains clearly the significance of this line in the development of steam railways. It also contains a collection of Leeds built locomotives with interesting histories."
