Reviews Summary
The National Bowl is a vast outdoor venue praised for its impressive capacity and excellent sound quality, making it ideal for large concerts and festivals. Attendees enjoy the unique grass amphitheatre setting and the energetic atmosphere. However, visitors often cite long queues for entry, food, and drinks, as well as high prices for concessions and local accommodation as significant drawbacks.
"Love this venue, it’s got amazing vibes and sound system is 🔥🔥. The layout is absolutely huge. First year we couldn’t find the carnival stage but this year managed to find them all. You definitely get your steps in. Nothing better than sitting on the slopes and chilling. The downside is drink prices are crazy and hotels in local area charge crazy prices but with it being a festival venue it’s what’s best expected and budget it accordingly as Reggaeland put some amazing artists on at this amazing venue. Can’t wait for next years already x"

"I was at Forever Now Festival Sunday 22nd June 2025. The main stage was great plenty of room & you could sit on the hill &watch from a distance. The second stage wasn't great not enough room & what on earth possessed them to put rocks & yellow dust or sand it was uneven under foot could've easily twisted my ankle. It was very claustrophobic they needed to make it wider & longer. I watched Theatre of Hate ,Pil & Happy Mondays They should've had Pil on the mainstage there were too many people squashed in there people left cause the couldn't see. As a whole it was a great event the Echo Chamber was a good idea but not enough room for everyone to sit. Caught the end of Richard Jobson had to stand outside the tent which made it difficult to hear every word of the interview. I was there early for Kirk Brandon & Stan Stammers but still couldn't get a seat but lucky to stand at the entrance to the tent so I got a good view & could hear everything.
I saw Berlin, Billy Idol, The The & Kraftwerk at the mainstage all were very good but Kraftwerk were outstanding visually & musically. Overall a great experience the food & drink was a bit over the top but I expected that £5 for a magnum ice cream helped me stick to my diet."

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
It's essential to check the specific event's age policy and consider bringing essentials like snacks (if permitted), sun protection, and comfortable carriers for very young children. The sheer scale of the venue means a lot of walking, so plan accordingly for little legs.
💰 Budget Travelers
To save money, consider bringing your own water if allowed by the event, or factor in the cost of purchasing it on-site. Look for deals on coach travel or carpooling to reduce transportation expenses. If staying overnight, explore accommodation options slightly further from the immediate venue area for potentially lower rates.
🎵 Music Enthusiasts
Attending festivals like Bludfest or Reggae Land provides an opportunity to discover new artists and immerse yourself in a vibrant music scene. The sheer scale of the venue and the energy of the crowds create a memorable concert experience.

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The History and Evolution of the National Bowl
The venue's history is intertwined with iconic performances. Green Day's 'Bullet in a Bible' live album was recorded here in 2005, capturing the raw energy of their show. Linkin Park also delivered a memorable performance, with Chester Bennington's extended vocalizations becoming a legendary moment for fans.
While its capacity is a major draw, the venue's outdoor nature and large scale present logistical challenges, particularly regarding crowd management and access. Despite these, the National Bowl remains a significant landmark for live music in the UK, offering a distinct experience for artists and audiences alike.
Navigating Festivals at the National Bowl
The sheer size of the venue means a lot of walking. Comfortable footwear is essential, as you'll be traversing large grassy areas and potentially uneven ground, especially if there are multiple stages or zones. While the main bowl offers a great view, some attendees have noted that secondary stages or areas can feel cramped or poorly organized, with insufficient space for the audience.
Budgeting is key for festival-goers. Food and drink prices are typically high, and accommodation in the local area can also be expensive during major events. Checking the specific 'do's and don'ts' list for each festival is crucial to avoid issues with prohibited items and ensure a smoother experience.
The Unique Amphitheatre Experience
This open-air setting offers a different kind of intimacy with the performance. While you might not have a reserved seat, the shared experience of being on the grass, surrounded by thousands of fellow music lovers, is a significant part of the appeal. It's a place where you can truly feel the energy of the crowd and the music resonating through the open space.
However, the natural terrain can also present challenges. Uneven ground and the sheer scale mean comfortable shoes are a must, and navigating between stages or facilities can involve considerable walking. Despite these considerations, the iconic visual of the bowl filled with people and illuminated by stage lights is a powerful image that draws many to experience live music here.
