What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Sankey Viaduct as an 'amazing piece of history' and a 'marvel of engineering'. Its significance as one of the world's oldest railway viaducts and its location above the first industrial canal are major draws. While some note the presence of graffiti and potential access barriers for bikes, the overall sentiment is that it's a 'well worth visiting' site, especially when combined with a walk along the Sankey Canal.
"Interesting historic viaduct, and we paired with a visit & walk on the Sankey Canal, also very interesting. Worth a visit."
Andy
"Over gated shared path. Most bikes will not go through the barriers without full dismount and lift. Great for electric scooters. The path is wide and consistent with a fine grit surface.
Viaduct has all the usual graffiti nonsense, reefer smoke in the air.
I liked it, could be more approachable."
Simon Cooper
"Graffiti is being removed from the viaduct at the moment so scaffolding covers part of it and we intend to go back when all work is done. Amazing piece of history, one of the earliest rail viaducts in the world above the first industrial canal in the world. Viaduct is also part of first intercity railway in the world (Manchester - Liverpool)!
Well worth visiting!"
