Planning Your Visit

Vehicle Choice is Key

The North Coast 500 (NC500) features narrow, winding roads. Renting a smaller campervan or motorcycle is highly recommended to navigate these challenging sections comfortably and safely. Consider a vehicle with good ground clearance for potential rougher patches. TikTokReddit

Timing Your Adventure

While beautiful year-round, the NC500 is busiest during summer. For fewer crowds and potentially better weather, consider visiting in late spring (May-June) or early autumn (September). Be prepared for midges, especially on the west coast during warmer, still conditions. TikTok+1

Reviews Summary

Travelers consistently praise the North Coast 500 for its absolutely breathtaking scenery, describing it as a 'ride of a lifetime' and 'one of the most amazing experiences'. The well-maintained rental vehicles and excellent customer service from local providers are frequently highlighted. However, some visitors mention the challenge of midges and the potential for crowded roads during peak season.

"Great bikes + great people!
There are so many worthy routes up this way - take your pick from the whiskey trail, isle of skye, NC500, or I’m sure many others.
Really appreciated the full gear kit + low seat bike.
And Keith is a lovely fellow - pleasant to chat to, helpful, and kindly offered me a drive to the train station.
Will be back!"

"Can only wholeheartedly recommend. Went spontaneously to them in the morning at 9:30, at 10:00, to rent a bike for 1 day, just for a short sprint on the NC 500. I was fully kitted (boots, pants, jacket,... everything you need, the wife as well), 1h later in Ullapool driving on some of the most beautiful roads on the planet. Good selection of bikes (lowered available as well), absolutley great service! Had the F750GS, bike performed flawlessly. Ride of a lifetime, thank you!"

Mircea Baldea

"Excellent Experience! Rode the NC 500 and enjoyed it so much I kept the bike another week and flew my wife over. Ron was a great guy and very accommodating. He made sure I had new tires and new brakes for the week with my wife. Bikes are perfectly serviced and his gear is first rate. I have rented motorcycles on every continent, but this was the best by far."

Frequently Asked Questions

🚇 🗺️ Getting There

The NC500 officially starts and ends in Inverness. You can fly into Inverness Airport (INV) or take a train to Inverness Station. Alternatively, many travelers fly into Edinburgh or Glasgow and drive north, which takes about 3-4 hours to reach Inverness. TikTok+1

The most popular way to experience the NC500 is by car or campervan. Motorcycles are also a fantastic option for experiencing the open road. Consider renting a vehicle in Inverness for convenience. TikTok+1

While challenging, it's possible to explore parts of the NC500 using public transport (buses) and cycling, but this requires significant planning and time. For the full experience, a vehicle is highly recommended. Reddit

Many recommend driving anti-clockwise to get the best views of the dramatic coastal roads, especially the Applecross Pass. However, clockwise is also enjoyable. TikTokInstagram

The route is approximately 516 miles (830 km). While it can be rushed in 3-5 days, a more relaxed and enjoyable trip is recommended for 7-10 days to fully appreciate the scenery and stops. TikTok

🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry

The North Coast 500 is a public road and does not require any entry tickets. However, some attractions along the route, such as Dunrobin Castle, may have admission fees. Instagram

There are no general tolls on the North Coast 500 route itself. However, some specific bridges or ferries might have small charges, though these are uncommon on the main loop. Reddit

Opening hours for attractions vary greatly. It's best to check the specific websites of castles, visitor centers, or distilleries you plan to visit in advance, especially outside of peak season. Instagram

Many viewpoints and lay-bys are free to park in. However, some popular spots, especially near villages or major attractions, may have designated parking areas with charges. Instagram

Wild camping is permitted in Scotland under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, but it comes with responsibilities. Always leave no trace, park responsibly, and be mindful of local communities and the environment. Instagram

🎫 🚗 On the Road

The NC500 features a mix of A-roads, single-track roads with passing places, and winding coastal routes. Be prepared for narrow sections, especially on the west coast, and drive cautiously. TikTokInstagram

Passing places are designated lay-bys on single-track roads. When meeting oncoming traffic, pull into the nearest passing place on your left. If the passing place is on your right, wait for the oncoming vehicle to pass. Instagram

Given the remote nature of some sections, it's crucial to have your vehicle checked before you go. Consider roadside assistance. If you break down, stay with your vehicle and call for help. TikTok

Petrol stations are more frequent in larger towns like Inverness, Ullapool, and Thurso. In more remote areas, they can be sparse. It's advisable to keep your fuel tank topped up whenever you have the opportunity. TikTok

Midges are tiny biting insects common in Scotland, especially on the west coast during warmer months. They are most active at dawn and dusk. Use a good insect repellent containing DEET and consider a midge head net for protection. TikTok

🍽️ 🍽️ Food & Dining

Seafood is a highlight, with fresh lobster, scallops, and fish and chips being popular choices. Look out for local game, traditional Scottish breakfasts, and shortbread. Instagram+1

Yes, there are excellent restaurants, pubs, and cafes scattered along the route, ranging from fine dining to casual eateries. Booking ahead is recommended, especially in smaller villages during peak season. Instagram

Larger towns like Inverness, Ullapool, and Thurso have supermarkets. Smaller villages may have local shops, but options can be limited. Stocking up in larger towns is a good idea. TikTok

While traditional Scottish cuisine can be meat-heavy, many establishments are increasingly offering vegetarian and vegan options. It's always best to check menus or call ahead. Instagram

Look for local seafood shacks and restaurants in coastal towns like Ullapool, Gairloch, and Scrabster. The Kylesku Hotel is also highly recommended for its seafood. Instagram+1

📸 📸 Photography

Iconic spots include the Applecross Pass, Achmelvich Beach, Kylesku Bridge, Dunrobin Castle, and the dramatic cliffs and sea stacks along the coast. Don't forget the stunning lochs and mountains. Instagram+2

Golden hour (shortly after sunrise and before sunset) offers the most beautiful light for landscapes. Midday sun can be harsh, but can work for dramatic shots of cliffs. TikTok

Drones can capture incredible aerial perspectives, but be aware of drone regulations in the UK and respect privacy. Always check local restrictions before flying. Instagram

A wide-angle lens is great for landscapes, a telephoto lens for wildlife, and a sturdy tripod for low-light conditions. A good weather-sealed camera is advisable due to the unpredictable Scottish weather. TikTok

While not as common as on other routes, some local guides or photography enthusiasts may offer tailored tours. It's worth searching for specialized photography workshops in the Highlands. TikTok
