What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Old Gala House is praised for its beautiful 16th-century architecture, tranquil gardens, and engaging art exhibitions. Visitors appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and the historical charm of the building. However, some find the focus on art over local history and limited activities for young children to be drawbacks.
"Old Gala House is one of Galashiels’ most beautiful and historic buildings — a 16th-century mansion turned museum, surrounded by peaceful gardens and leafy grounds. Once home to the Laird of Galashiels, it now tells the story of the town’s past through fascinating local exhibits, art displays, and changing seasonal exhibitions.
We loved wandering through its manicured gardens, which are calm and colourful — a lovely spot to sit after exploring.
It’s the perfect mix of culture and tranquillity, tucked just a few minutes’ walk from the town centre. Whether you’re interested in Borders history or simply enjoy beautiful old buildings, Old Gala House is well worth a visit.
Be sure to check their website, as the house and museum close for part of the year."

"More of an art gallery for than museum, with most of the rooms devoted to past artists from the Galashiels area or modern artists display, and very minimal history of Galashiels its self. I went here with my children (aged 9 and 2) and there wasn’t a lot for them todo or be interested in (although it did look like they were setting up a trail of some kind, when inquired it wasn’t ready yet). There are lots of rooms, and stairs, so not for those who find it hard to navigate such things. The layout is quite scrambled and you’re given minimal guidance to finding your way around. Lastly the gift shop is sparse with nothing to tempt children, which is good in one way but just leaves you with the feeling that is with kiddies aren’t really welcome there."
