What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Old Wye Bridge as a cherished historical landmark with architectural beauty and scenic views of Hereford Cathedral and the River Wye. Its enduring charm connects the past with the present, offering a delightful experience for walkers and photographers. However, some find parking expensive and note potential traffic congestion due to the bridge's narrowness.
"Originally built around 1490 to replace a wooden bridge dating back to at least 1100, it has served as a vital crossing point on the River Wye for centuries. A gatehouse was added to the south end of the bridge in 1490 to control access to the city, but it was later damaged during the English Civil War and demolished in 1782. During the Siege of Hereford in 1645, the bridge was the scene of heavy fighting, and a section of it was deliberately damaged to prevent the enemy from entering the city. The bridge was widened in 1826 to accommodate more traffic.
A great bit of history and despite the construction of a second bridge, the "Old Bridge" remains an important landmark."

"Wonderful 17th century bridge that crosses the Wye in the centre of Hereford. Great views. Traffic is controlled at both ends by lights though some cyclists seem to think that they are are immune. Photos taken during flooding, something that seems to be happening more frequently these days."
