What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the sheer abundance of fallow deer, describing the park as a beautiful and accessible place for walks. The picturesque views of Petworth House and the opportunity to witness the autumn deer rut are frequently highlighted as major draws. Some note that while the park is free, access to the house incurs additional costs and toilet facilities can be limited if not visiting the house.
"This is one of the best place to see deers , literally there is hundreds and hundreds of deers and surface is mostly flat . If you are doing round trips itโs around 7km and will take you around 2 hours . Parking are easily available"

"Beautiful grounds owned by the National Trust. Apart from walking & enjoying the open grounds, there is also a lake with geese/ducks/swans, as well as roaming fallow deer.
Decent size car park with reasonable car park fees. We paid ยฃ3 fee, which covered the whole day."

"An accessible park with surprises to find throughout the year from 500 year old oak trees to colourful fungi and fallow deer. On an Autumn day there is nothing better than to sit and watch the deer rut in progress as stags select their harems and protect them from challengers. Listen too to the distinctive grunts as stags challenge and respond with accompanying parallel walks before clashing antlers and pushing to decide who is dominant. Keep your dog under control at this time please.
You can easily walk around the whole park in an hour and a half as it is only 5 Km, though diversions will add time and distance. There are three ponds to divert to with wildfowl to watch, one is much larger than the others and is of course there as a reflecting pool for the house frontage.
Dogs are welcome but must be under strict control as every year deer are mauled by dogs off their leads and not under control.
There is a folly with views of the house and South Downs if you are going anti clockwise round the park.
Parking is available within the park if you are just here to walk and not visit the house or formal gardens. The one for access to the house and is pay to park and is about 400 metres from the house on a good path through the formal garden. Many cars park around two sides of the wall on the main roads. Toilets are in the in the kitchen tearoom buildings or at the ticket office by the car park entrance. You have to have paid for the National Trust access ticket to use the toilets in the restaurant block! Failing that ....
Throughout the year there is much to enjoy in the park. Yes the Fallow deer stags shed their antlers which can be found in late Spring as can new born deer if you are very very lucky.
Autumn colours, fungi of all sorts and Sweet chestnut trees add to the things to keep children distracted and amused on their walk.
And if it rains you can always get a ticket to look round the house and admire the many cultures and Turner's paintings therein."
