Insider Tips

from TikTok, Instagram & Reddit

One of the best castles in the country, IMO. I picked this destination randomly and had no expectations but it turned out absolutely beautiful, especially during bloom season and with good weather. I paid £16 for garden access only. Next time, I’ll definitely go inside the main building and catch the tulip festival again. 📍Arundel Castle BN18 9AB About 1,5hours by train from London Victoria to Aru...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Picton Castle & Gardens for its stunning and diverse gardens, particularly the walled garden and jungle walk. The well-preserved castle offers a fascinating glimpse into history, and Maria's Cafe is a standout for its delicious Spanish cuisine. The dog-friendly policy is a major plus for many.

"We had the opportunity to stay for a week here in June at one of the two Gatehouses available as holiday apartments!
The place is fantastic with about 50 acres of gardens and woodland paths. It would be difficult to see it all in one day! The walled garden is amazing! So many varieties of plants and flowers. I couldn't stop shaking pictures. Probably one is the most diverse collections anywhere with many exotics!
The castle is of course amazing as well. Originally built in the 1200s and expanded in the 1500s it's very well preserved: members of the Philipps family lived here only a few years ago!
Maria's Cafe is also on site offering Spanish food, cakes, scones and even beer, wine and
Ice cream! Maria has been running this cafe for more than 40 years and is a sweet wonderful lady!
You will not be disappointed with your visit to Picton Castle! Definitely worth the trip!"

"What a magical place.

We absolutely loved visiting here and shall definitely be going back soon.

The gardens are amazing and so vibrant in colour and style.

We loved the walled garden, the little elf houses and the jungle walk.

The real jewel in the crown here is the coffee shop.

The food here was the best we ate all weekend. It has a Spanish vibe and was a proper party in the mouth!

We had the lemon meringue with strawberries, salmon and broccoli quiche and patatas bravas. This was authentic Spanish cooking by someone who is passionate about the food they serve!!!

We will be back for the food and to explore more 😎"

"Arriving for its opening time of 10am, there was plenty of parking spaces for even a busy day, and a short walk brings to the entrance kiosk where the helpful attendant explained that the entry ticket could be used for revisits for up to a week, and that the castle could only be visited in the afternoon.
Nearby the old stable yard houses a lovely restaurant (with a lovely selection of drink, cakes and hot food); an old lawnmowers museum; a small garden plant sales area; and a room full of pre-loved books!
A walk around outside of the dominant castle, shows a mix of impressive building stages, with the 700 year old part being stone, and the main Georgian ‘residential’ part being rendered in what possibly was a pinkish colour. Beyond the large grass area is a wooded valley, filled with an impressive mix of varied and unusual shrubs and trees … the rhododendrons and azaleas were starting to blossom well, creating splashes of bright colour within the dark woodland. As i walked around the woodland, the path led through a newly planted fernery, to a lovely ornamental walled garden. The old potting sheds have even being turned into an indoor fernery … for me, this area of the whole garden was definitely a highlight. A short walk then takes you back towards the entry/exit, toilets and castle buildings."
