This is Pluscarden Abbey in Moray, Scotland. It is the only medieval British monastery that is still being used for its original purpose—worship and work by a community of monks. This is quite an incredible fact, especially when we consider the turbulent and violent history that has plagued Pluscarden. Originally founded as a priory for the Valliscaulian order in 1230 by Alexander II of Scotland...

"Visiting Elgin Abbey was not a plan. I was looking for fabric store to buy tartan for quilt, Got what I need then we went to Abbey, because Elgin museum was closed. It was very good visit , the weather was good the abbey itself has lots history. Took lots picture , the gift shop was small but able to buy a few things. Ceramic thimble that was my treasure ! it was good visit."

"I loved my time here. The monks were friendly and welcoming. I attended the vigils, lauds, prime, terce, mass, sext, none, vespers, and compline, from 04:30 - 20:00. I spent the whole day
here, and it was an amazing experience. They have benches to sit at, bins, toilets, free parking, a shop, information boards, a visitor centre, and the building itself is a marvel. They also do retreats where you can come here and stay."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Living Piece of History

Pluscarden Abbey stands as a remarkable testament to continuity, being the only medieval British monastery still actively used for its original purpose: worship and work by a community of monks. Founded in 1230 by Alexander II for the Valliscaulian Order, it has weathered centuries of change. Following a merger in 1454, it transitioned to the Benedictine Order, a tradition that continues to this day. This enduring presence makes visiting Pluscarden a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience a living piece of history. Instagram

The Abbey's architecture itself tells a story, with its impressive 13th-century structures that have been lovingly preserved and, in some areas, restored. The sense of peace and devotion that permeates the air is palpable, a feeling amplified by the monks' daily rhythm of prayer and labor. Visitors often remark on the profound tranquility that envelops the site, a stark contrast to the outside world. InstagramReddit

Beyond its historical significance, Pluscarden Abbey also embraces contemporary expressions of its faith. The monks have collaborated with musicians, releasing albums of Gregorian chant that blend ancient traditions with modern sensibilities. This fusion highlights the Abbey's role not just as a historical monument, but as a vibrant spiritual center. Instagram+1

The Benedictine Way of Life

At the heart of Pluscarden Abbey is the Benedictine way of life, guided by the principles of prayer, work, and community. The monks dedicate their days to a structured schedule that includes the Divine Office (the Liturgy of the Hours), Mass, and manual labor. This commitment to a balanced spiritual and practical existence is what defines their daily rhythm. Instagram+1

Visitors have the unique opportunity to witness this devotion firsthand by attending the various services throughout the day. The highlight for many is hearing the monks perform Gregorian chant, a form of liturgical music that has been central to monastic life for centuries. The resonant chants echoing through the Abbey's ancient stone walls create an unforgettable spiritual experience. Instagram+1

For those seeking a deeper immersion, Pluscarden Abbey offers retreats. These stays allow individuals to participate more fully in the monastic life, finding peace and spiritual renewal in a secluded and contemplative environment. The guest house, Saint Joseph's, has undergone recent improvements, making it a comfortable base for such an experience. InstagramReddit
