"Arrived Friday afternoon the door of the property was very shoddy looking not a good start. Climbing the very steep stone staircase (which we knew about) we came upon the kitchen, on opening the door it was absolutely freezing, there was a small electric blowing heater on the wall which had no real effect on the size of the room. We decided to make a hot drink it was just as well be brought provisions as our welcome pack consisted of a near out date packet of biscuits and some sugar!!! and nothing else
The work tops were extremely worn especially around the sink area were the seals had gone leaving some of the worktop soaking wet. The reading nook above the kitchen the seating was quite grubby and worn. Sitting at the dining table one of the chairs was totally marked and most of the vinyl on the seat missing. We thought things could not gotten worse, so we ascended the final staircase to the living area, we then realised that if we need to come to the kitchen you had to decend the steep steps. Upon opening the living room door the freezing cold took our breath away again a wall mounted electric heater which was clearly inadequate for the size of the room. The seating area was again quite grubby with the cushions really old. The main bathroom was off the living room, a bit successful as the heated towel rail provided some much needed heat. It was just as well we brought some of our own towels with us as we were given one small bath towel and a very small hand towel each (this was suppose to last us for a week!!! The toilet seat was quite stained and did not fit properly and the shower cubicle was an old electric push button type, the hose from the shower head was blackening and peeling. Up another normal flight of stairs brought us to the mezzanine bedroom, there was another electric wall mounted heater high on one of the beams, the bed was really large and quite comfortable but the pillows looked as though they hadn't been renewed in a long time. We then unpacked only to find there was no wardrobe we later discovered a single bar behind the A shaped mirror with a few hangers on? we had to drape our clothes over the bannisters as the chest of drawers was wholely inadequate.
I booked this accommodation as a surprise for my husband's birthday expected an upper class luxurious retreat, instead we got a freezing, (we slept in our coats the first night it took best part of 3 days for us to feel some heat)
inferior holiday let which needs a complete refurbishment to bring it into the 21st century given the money I spent booking this accommodation I was completely upset and extremely disappointed. The only plus was the views (which we shared with a nesting pigeon via the living room window) and the water was really hot, oh and Alnwick town was on the doorstep."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Unique Experience of Staying in a Medieval Tower

Staying at Pottergate Tower is an immersion into history. This Grade II-listed tower, dating back to the 1760s, offers a truly unique accommodation experience. Unlike modern hotels, it retains much of its original medieval character, including steep, narrow spiral staircases that connect its various levels. This architectural feature is both charming and a practical consideration for visitors, as it requires careful navigation and packing light. InstagramReddit

Reviews highlight the tower's rustic appeal, with original stonework and a sense of stepping back in time. However, this historical authenticity can also mean that amenities and furnishings might be more basic or worn than in contemporary accommodations. Some guests have noted that the heating can be inadequate, and certain areas might feel a bit dated. Despite these points, the unique atmosphere and the opportunity to live within such a historic structure are significant draws for many visitors seeking an unconventional getaway. Reddit

The location of Pottergate Tower is another major advantage. Situated in the heart of Alnwick, it provides immediate access to the town's amenities, including shops, cafes, and historical sites. This central position allows guests to easily explore Alnwick on foot, making it a convenient base for discovering the local area. The views from the tower, overlooking the town, add to the overall charm and provide a picturesque backdrop to your stay. Reddit

Navigating the Challenges of Historic Accommodation

Pottergate Tower offers a romantic, historical stay, but it's essential to be aware of its unique challenges. The most frequently mentioned aspect is the steep and narrow spiral staircases. These are not just a feature but a necessity for moving between the tower's levels, from the kitchen to the living area and the bedroom. Travelers are strongly advised to pack light, as carrying heavy luggage up these stairs can be difficult. Comfortable footwear is also a must for navigating these historic steps safely. Reddit

Another point raised in reviews concerns the comfort and modernity of the amenities. While the tower provides essential services like Wi-Fi and hot water, some guests have found the heating to be insufficient, particularly during colder months. The furnishings and decor are described as rustic, and some areas, like the kitchen worktops and seating, have shown signs of wear and tear. It's important for visitors to manage expectations and understand that this is a historic dwelling, not a luxury hotel. Bringing extra warm clothing and personal comfort items is a good idea. Reddit

Finally, self-catering aspects are crucial to consider. The kitchen facilities are available for guests to use, but the welcome provisions can be minimal. This means planning ahead and bringing your own food, drinks, and even extra towels is recommended for a more comfortable and self-sufficient stay. Despite these considerations, many guests find the unique experience and the tower's historical ambiance well worth the minor inconveniences. Reddit
