What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Red Lion Square in Stamford is celebrated as the town's historic heart, offering a central point for exploration and a glimpse into its rich past. In London, it's appreciated as a peaceful green oasis in Holborn with intriguing historical connections. Both locations are easily accessible and offer pleasant experiences.
"The best place to start any site seeing or town visit in Stamford. Probably the most central location in the town to then visit any of the main sites from. Stamford is a beautiful town with a full and variedly rich history due to its location on the Great North Road between London and England's 2nd city in medieval times of York. Its high number of churches is due to this fact and the placing of religious reliquaries for the high numbers of pilgrim travellers who used the very dangerous Great North Road (today's A1) as a stop to ask for protection from the many perils one could encounter on such a journey. Highwaymen, footpads or wandering gangs of incorrigible rogues were known to patrol the main artery between the North and South of England, so the high number of churches and hostelries that Stamford had then and to a certain point still has today was to cater for these beleaguered travelers. Stamford is a fantastic place to visit if you are interested in British history or just looking for a quaint place to spend a few days."
