Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Lynmouth for its picturesque harbour, the unique water-powered cliff railway, and the scenic beauty of the surrounding Lyn Valley Gorge. The charming villages of Lynmouth and Lynton offer a delightful escape. However, some visitors have reported negative experiences with local attitudes, and the rocky beach is not ideal for traditional beach activities.

"Lynmouth is a small village with a water powered cliff railway that cost £3.75 each way payment by card only that takes you up to Lynton,.
There are shops, cafes and bars in the village of Lynton.
There is a nice footpath to walk back down the hill that gives great views of the village and surrounding countryside.
The water spouts that are quite prominent are situated in glen gorge.
There's a 18 hole putting green and a large grassed area with seats on the main path across the river from the main road.
The main road past the harbour runs to a car park at the end of the esplanade along which the cliff railway is situated.
There is plenty of access to the river and fairly level grass banks to relax on, paddling in the river is also easy to get to if the water level allows.
There are ladies toilets and disability toilets on the esplanade, men need to use the disabled toilets and they cost 50p.
The main beach is made up mainly of rock and unsuitable for sunbathing.
Buses run to Lynton from Barnstaple, Ilfracombe and Minehead."

"I'm Chinese tourist and I experienced racism. We took our takeaway food and the beer we had bought from the Ancient Mariner to the opposite side of the street, eating in the sea wind (because we had been expelled for bringing food from another shop, even though the pub wasn’t serving food at 3:30 p.m.). Then the manager came with a cheap and ugly plastic cup and told us to pour our beer from the glass into the plastic one, saying we would be fined if we didn’t. However, two local lads next to us were allowed to enjoy their beers in glass cups."

Xizheng Fang

"as you descend from the alley that starts from the top of the hill right at the end of the cliff railway, you reach this place where you can relax with a coffee or eat something and admire the sea. they also have an information center there with souvenirs and the lady is very nice. there are also toilets."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Lynmouth Cliff Railway: A Historic Marvel

The Lynmouth Cliff Railway is a remarkable feat of Victorian engineering, connecting the picturesque harbour village of Lynmouth with the clifftop town of Lynton. This water-powered funicular railway is one of only three remaining in the world that operate purely on gravity and water. Passengers pay a fare to ascend or descend the steep incline, enjoying breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline and the two villages as they travel. The journey itself is a highlight for many visitors, offering a unique and memorable experience. TikTok

Constructed in 1898, the railway uses a sophisticated system where water is pumped from the river into tanks at the top of the incline. As the water's weight pulls the descending carriage down, it powers the ascending carriage. This ingenious, eco-friendly design has been in continuous operation for over a century, making it a testament to sustainable innovation. Visitors often remark on the smooth, quiet ride and the stunning vistas that unfold during the short but impactful journey. Reddit

Practical Tips: Remember that payment for the cliff railway is by card only, and it's advisable to check operating hours, as they can vary seasonally. The experience is highly recommended for its historical significance and the unparalleled views it provides. Reddit

Exploring the Lyn Valley Gorge

The Lyn Valley Gorge is a dramatic natural landscape that forms a significant part of the charm of the Lynmouth area. This deep gorge is characterized by its steep sides and the presence of unique water spouts, which are a notable feature for visitors. The gorge offers opportunities for exploration and is a popular spot for those who enjoy walking and immersing themselves in nature. Reddit

Walking paths wind through the gorge, allowing visitors to experience its rugged beauty up close. These trails provide access to the water spouts and offer a chance to appreciate the unique geological formations. The area is known for its scenic appeal, making it a rewarding destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts looking for a tranquil escape. TikTok

Visitor Advice: Wear appropriate footwear for walking on potentially uneven terrain. The gorge is a natural attraction, so be prepared for a more rugged experience compared to manicured parks. Enjoy the unique atmosphere and the sound of the water. Reddit

Lynmouth's Harbour and Rhenish Tower

The harbour of Lynmouth is the heart of the village, a picturesque setting where the Rhenish Tower stands as a prominent landmark. This charming area is perfect for a leisurely stroll, offering lovely views of the coastline and the boats bobbing in the water. The Rhenish Tower itself, a distinctive stone structure, adds to the visual appeal and is a popular spot for photographs. TikTok

Visitors often find the harbour a relaxing place to unwind, perhaps enjoying a coffee or a snack from a nearby cafe while taking in the sea air. The esplanade provides easy access to the river and the sea, with grassy banks offering spots to sit and enjoy the scenery. It's a central point for understanding the village's maritime heritage and its connection to the sea. Reddit

Photography Focus: The Rhenish Tower and the harbour offer excellent photographic opportunities, especially during the softer light of early morning or late afternoon. Capture the essence of this coastal village by framing shots that include the tower, the water, and the surrounding landscape. TikTok
