I bagged my first Munro today 🥹🎉❤️ I walked up Schiehallion and honestly loved it so much. I’ve been wanting to climb my first Munro for years but never felt ready - mentally, physically or both. Today was the day though, and it turns out that sometimes the label is just a label. I found other hikes I did several times before more strenuous (like Ben Ledi or Ben Cleuch) - I will say though that t...

Schiehallion - please note my Jack Russell mix dogs are trained for trail running and hiking, if they are not happy we turn back immediately, but actually they are faster than me 🤣🥵 - not all pets are ready for rocky hills like this one so take care and seek advice on how to get your dog munro ready ❤ 4-6 hour hike. What an amazing way to get your steps in ⛰️ 😍 visit Scotland 👏 #visitscotland ...

Reviews Summary

Schiehallion is widely praised as an accessible and rewarding Munro, perfect for beginners and offering stunning Highland views. Visitors appreciate its historical significance and well-maintained trail. While generally positive, some reviews mention occasional inconsistencies in food quality at the nearby hotel.

"We did not stay in this hotel, but next door in the Townhouse. We did eat and drink in the bar for 2 days and nights. Food was plentiful and tasty, with a good menu. I miss not having a cask ale, but I managed with Belhaven best. The staff were all very friendly and attentive"

Robert McNeill

"Only used the restaurant not the hotel.
The first time visiting a year ago was probably the best meal my family has ever had. We were extremely disappointed on a couple of things this time though.

Steak that was overcooked and a bit small.
Burger was just a pile of meat with no actual shape, never seen a burger like that. And the taste was really unpleasant. I definitely couldn’t have a burger from here again after that.
The wait time was around 40/45 minutes.

2 kids loved their food so not all bad & the staff were friendly.

But such a shame when we had fond memories to spend over £80 on food we didn’t like. I’m struggling to want to go and retry and hope it was just an off night."

Conor S

"Visited for food on a quiet Friday afternoon. Lovely pub area and a warm welcome - including for our dog Dixie.
Delicious food - options for everyone, including me as a vegan. The VG options were real food too not FrankenBurgers with fake meat etc. I always forget to photograph the food but trust me, it was nice. I did take a photo of the cute mouse on my beer glass and can heartily recommend a pint of Schiehallion Lager to go with it."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Scientific Significance of Schiehallion

Schiehallion is more than just a beautiful mountain; it's a site of significant scientific history. In the 1770s, astronomers and physicists, including Charles Hutton, conducted an experiment here to determine the Earth's mass. They measured the gravitational pull of the mountain on a pendulum, comparing it to the Earth's overall gravitational force. This experiment, though not perfectly precise by modern standards, was a groundbreaking attempt to understand the planet's density and mass. Instagram

The experiment involved precise measurements of the deflection of a plumb line due to the mountain's attraction. The results, while having a margin of error, were remarkably close to modern calculations, proving the concept that mountains possess gravitational pull and contributing significantly to the understanding of Newtonian gravity. This historical context adds a fascinating layer to any hike up its slopes, allowing visitors to connect with a pivotal moment in scientific exploration. Reddit

Today, while the exact experiment apparatus is no longer visible, the mountain's unique conical shape and its role in this historical endeavor are widely recognized. It's a testament to human curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge, making Schiehallion a destination that appeals to both nature lovers and history buffs.

Schiehallion for Munro Beginners

Schiehallion is frequently recommended as an excellent first Munro for aspiring hikers. Its popularity stems from a well-defined and relatively straightforward path, especially when conditions are favorable. The mountain is still subject to unpredictable Scottish weather, and the terrain can be rocky and uneven. Proper preparation, including appropriate footwear and clothing, is essential. Instagram

For those looking to bag their first Munro, Schiehallion provides a fantastic introduction to the experience. It builds confidence and offers a tangible sense of accomplishment, encouraging further exploration of Scotland's magnificent mountains. Many visitors share their success stories online, highlighting its suitability for those taking their first steps into Munro bagging. Instagram+1
