What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the stunning scenery, particularly the dramatic red cliffs and panoramic views from Connaught Gardens. The iconic Jacob's Ladder steps and the charming Clocktower Cafe with its delicious cakes and unparalleled sea views are frequently highlighted as must-visit attractions. While the pebble beach is beautiful, some mention the potential for rockfalls from the cliffs and the busyness during peak times.
"Pebble beach surrounded by red soil cliffs, which are extremely dangerous at times due to rock falls. However, the east end of the beach is safe. Gentle slope into the sea, with a beautiful feeling of the Mediterranean or even Lake Como. Warm water in Summer too. Our visit was wonderful and we felt as though we were on holiday despite living only six miles away. Clock Tower Cafe is up some steep steps/ladder at the far east end, past the beach huts. A thoroughly enjoyable time here early morning but beware that it may get extremely busy at times. A fantastic beach however!"

"Nice beach lovely this time of year. Just been downtown and it was busy and beach was filling up. Couldn’t take many photos as I was on my motorcycle so the picture with boat in is at the other end of beach at the Ham and the other photo is at the top of Jacob’s ladder looking over the beach and town."

"Stunning scenery, coastline, cliffs and beautiful gardens all within easy walking distance.
The beauty of this area is second to none. The glorious Jurassic coast laid bare as far as the eye can see and a beautiful walk, either above the beach on the cliffs for those who don't mind a hilly adventure. Or a beautiful pebbly walk along the far stretching beach. The famous white steps which lend their name to this amazing place lead up to the wonderful Connaught Gardens, where old and young alike can enjoy a stroll or explore the different areas, all interconnected by well kept pathways and secret entrances. The gardens are stunningly well maintained and are a visual treat year round. The views of the coast are amazing from here and there are numerous benches where one can take a pitstop.
And if all this is not enough to entice a visit, the amazing Clocktower Cafe, to be found within the gardens is worth a visit on its own. The views from this small but well run establishment are possibly the best views a cafe could claim to have, beautifully framed by the quaint arched windows and the decor is a delight. And as for the food... It is reasonably priced and of a very high standard, using locally sourced products where possible.
And on to their cake counter.... I could not possibly describe here the mouthwatering, seemingly mile high cakes that are on display. All manner of delights and the only downside is trying to choose which one to have! The staff here are very personable and although busy, always go the extra mile to provide a friendly service. We went after 4pm and sadly the upstairs was closed but eating a piece of cake looking out across the cliffs, pebbles and sea is most certainly food for the soul as well as the stomach. ❤️"
