Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the Southbank Centre's diverse cultural offerings, from thought-provoking art exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery to the vibrant atmosphere of the Food Market and festive Winter Market. The Brutalist architecture and riverside location are frequently praised, offering stunning views and a lively ambiance. Some find gift shop prices high and note occasional issues with air conditioning during hot weather.

"Visited to see the Nara exhibition which was worth every penny! Such beautiful, thought provoking art. Some of the items in the gift shop we thought were over priced. If they were just a little lower in price, we would have purchased more. Nice cafe on the first floor but it was a very hot day and the air conditioning was off or was not working which was not great!"

Vegas

"Such a great discovery! It was my first time visiting, for Nara’s exhibition, and I was pleasantly surprised. The space is beautiful and there’s so much going on — I’ll definitely be back."

Sara Greco

"The fifth floor has some lovely views of London and a quiet place to sit down. For free. The gift shop has lovely London souvenirs and the place is clean and has a nice atmosphere."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Architectural Marvels of Southbank Centre

The Southbank Centre is a significant landmark of Brutalist architecture, a style characterized by its raw, exposed concrete and monumental forms. The Hayward Gallery, designed by Denys Lasdun, is a prime example, with its distinctive hexagonal concrete towers and dramatic interior spaces. Its stark aesthetic creates a powerful contrast with the surrounding environment and the River Thames. TikTok

The Royal Festival Hall, also part of the complex, showcases a different facet of mid-20th-century design, with its elegant curves and grand public spaces. Together, these buildings form a cohesive and imposing cultural hub that has been a focal point for arts and performance in London for decades. TikTok

Visitors often remark on the striking visual impact of the architecture, finding it both imposing and inspiring. The interplay of concrete, light, and space within the galleries and performance venues contributes to a unique visitor experience, making the buildings themselves as much of an attraction as the events held within them.
