Visited St. Machar’s Cathedral and really enjoyed the experience. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect—it’s not a huge cathedral by any means, more like a very large church—but it definitely has charm and historical significance. I learned that what technically makes it a cathedral is the presence of a bishop, and it’s debatable whether that’s still the case today. Still, it holds the title and it’s worth a visit.
Inside, the wooden ceiling is a highlight—beautifully crafted with decorative plaques that are genuinely impressive. You can also go upstairs for a great view and to admire the stained glass windows up close.
Outside, the graveyard is packed with tombstones dating back to the 1700s, which adds even more atmosphere to the visit. A peaceful, thought-provoking stop with lots of character and history."

"Very unusual wooden ceiling, with shields of many countries. Visits are free and they give you a free leaflet, explaining the cathedral’s features, including information on all the shields. There is a shop. The day I visited was a family day, with refreshments and medieval costumes for children."
