St. Mary the Virgin dates back to the 11th century, when a Norman church was built and incorporated in the present building as the nave in the 13th century.
The present church was dedicated in or around 1243. In the 14th century the north and south transepts were built on, and in the 15th century the clerestory windows and the splendid west window were added.
Architecturally, it is one of the most important churches in West Oxfordshire and its spire is, as Pevsner has said, with that of Oxford cathedral is the most impressive tower of this date in the county."
