Reviews Summary

Visitors praise St. Michael's Church for its stunning 15th-century architecture and welcoming atmosphere. The historical details, including the unique lookout tower and ancient graffiti, are frequently highlighted as fascinating discoveries. It's considered a well-preserved gem worth exploring.

"Wonderful community of worshippers. It's nice to see such an active church in this historical gem of 15th century architecture. The lookout tower at the SE of the building is rather unique. A really fine example of the coat of arms over a doorway, perhaps Henry VIII era. A very welcoming place well worth a visit."

Jay Steinmetz

"An interesting church that has seen many alterations over the years. So many guidebooks! There is a guidebook 'A short history of the building' that goes into great detail on the building and the changes over the years. There is a separate short guide to the windows and memorials, although without pictures. Another guide is the 'Historic graffiti from the Tower', this one with pictures of many of the 17th & 18th century images found during the tower roof repair. best however is the simple 'Exploring St Michael's Church' leaflet which has a good number of interesting features to look for. This is a spacious church, light and airy with some very good stained glass. Worth calling in."

Roy Sirl

"Alnwick's parish church of St Michael is one of the best-preserved and architecturally outstanding churches in Northumberland. The first church on this site may have been established as early as the 8th century but the first written record of a church at Alnwick dates to the 12th century.
In 1147 Eustace fitz John gave the 'Chapel of Alnwick' to the newly established Abbey. The only part of that 12th-century building to survive is a section of herringbone stonework in the chancel.
St Michael's was badly damaged during Scottish raids in the early 14th century. The church was rebuilt and the present nave erected in the late 14th century. The north aisle was added at the same time.
Most of the present building dates to the 15th century and is an excellent example of the Perpendicular Gothic style."
