Reviews Summary

Visitors praise St. Paul's Monastery for its historical significance, particularly its connection to the Venerable Bede, and the opportunity to explore original 7th-century structures. The free entry and peaceful atmosphere are highlighted as major positives, though some note the grounds can be uneven for those with mobility challenges. Reddit

"I had a wonderful experience yesterday visiting St. Paul Monastery in Jarrow, on the southeast side of the River Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England. I chose it because it’s less restricted than Lindisfarne with the tides, and I wanted a monastery where I could roam freely, take my time, and see structures that were identified as existing when the Viking raids occurred.

For those who grew up with a deep appreciation for Mick Aston and Phil Harding from Time Team, I highly recommend it. It’s a rare opportunity to study the architecture and walls closely while enjoying full access to the grounds. The educational signage clearly explains what is original and what has been rebuilt.

I also highly recommend entering the church itself. They have a water bowl for four-legged visitors, which adds a welcoming touch. Inside, a small one-pound donation is requested for photos or videos, but the volunteers are warm and encouraging, letting you explore at your own pace. Be sure to visit the very back, which is the original part from the 7th century—it’s a highlight of any visit.

A few notes: the grounds can be challenging for those needing level walking, with grass, uneven surfaces, and stones placed to reduce wear. There’s ample parking on the street or the grounds. The nearest metro stop is about half a mile away, but it doesn’t diminish the experience.

A couple of final notes: although it’s not Lindisfarne, in the spirit of Ragnar, Aethelstan, and even a little bit of Floki, it’s definitely felt. On a weekday in October, the weather was gorgeous in the 50s, and the site was mostly empty, allowing plenty of time for exploring the grounds with no rush. The few other visitors were also very pleasant. The gift shop is dignified and fitting for the setting. Church services are offered for those interested, though I won’t go into details."

"Beautiful church with monastery ruins, St Peter’s was smaller church on the site, St Paul’s a larger church was built a little later on. The monastery was the home of the venerable Bede.
It is an English Heritage site, however entry is free. There are lots of information boards around the ruins.
St Paul’s was one of the first monasteries to be suppressed during the reformation in 1536.
The church is open for you to explore and there are some original features. The dedication stone of St Paul’s.The Anglo -Saxon monastery survives as the chancel of St Paul’s church. Evidence of this can be seen in the south wall, Saxon windows are still in place.
There is parking close by, there is also a little shop area in the church.
Great little place to visit."

"Lovely old Anglo Saxon church on the banks of the river Don in Jarrow, next to the ruins of the ancient monastery of the Venerable Bede, father of British history. A quiet peaceful setting to just sit in the grounds and chill."
