Staithes — A Hidden Coastal Gem near York 🌊🏡 Just 1.5 hours from York, this tiny fishing village feels like a page from an old storybook. Colorful cottages. Cobbled streets. Boats swaying in a sleepy harbour. And not a crowd in sight. 💙 We spent the day walking, exploring, and simply sitting by the water with my parents — watching waves, eating home-packed food, and soaking up the peace. ✨ Stai...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Staithes for its breathtaking beauty and timeless charm, often describing it as a 'hidden gem'. The picturesque harbour, colourful cottages, and winding cobbled streets create a magical atmosphere. Many appreciate the peacefulness, especially outside of peak season, and the friendly locals. The main drawback for some is the steep walk back up to the car park.

"Beautiful place, always wanted to visit and it didn't disappoint.
Parked at the car park at the top of the hill and walked down the footpath and steps through the houses to the picturesque harbour.
Called in at the Cod & Lobster for half a lager. Lovely pub and dog friendly. Grabbed a lovely pizza from Cobbles too. Will be back."

Kim Snowden

"Beautiful place, and a hidden gem! good amount of shops, pubs, tea rooms, and beach, for sun bathing.
Glad we got there early to grab a parking space, where there's toilets, and very tasty ice cream! The vanilla,so even black using the famous whitby jet!
Weather-wise fantastic when we went, but beware its quite a climb, uphill, back to the car park. You must go!"

John Appleby

"If you want to get away from the hustle & bustle of life, get some peace & quiet and be surrounded in the most stunning scenery, then go to Staithes.
We went out of season at the end of September and it was absolutely bliss. One day, we were the only people on the beach; it was incredibly surreal but exactly what we needed after a traumatic time at home.
Staithes is a place where you can leave your walking boots outside to cry and they'll still be there when you go to retrieve them!! The local cafe left a plastic box out in the evening, with a little sign 'freshly baked scones 4 for £2.50'. You take your scones and leave the cash in the cup provided.....and no-one even considers stealing.
The locals are so lovely; everyone is so happy, chatty and laid back.
Staithes itself is breathtaking. The views are stunning, the walks are pleasurable and being there was such a relaxing experience 😌"
