Reviews Summary

The Stevenage Clock Tower is recognized as a significant icon of the town's 1970s new town development, appreciated for its unique architecture. While the surrounding area has been renovated with amenities like seating and toilets, some visitors find the ground markings confusing. It's a central landmark that sparks discussion about the town's identity.

"This town centre reminds me a lot of Sasolburg, the town I grew up in, and this fountain/clock combo especially so. The 1970s architecture still maintained, unlike my hometown, makes it all the more special."

Mr Bester

"Significant icon of stevenage! Unfortunately there's construction in the way so I can't see the fountain. But I enjoyed the chime! A must see part of Stevenage"

Adam Burnett

"The clock tower and fountain are fine. A thing of their time and a landmark of the new town. Do not venture far from it or you will enter a badly designed and totally odd flat area that used to be the bus station. Little money has been spent there except to draw lines which confuse a great many people
If you are autistic take care. If you are elderly try to avoid the lines. If you are a skater take care for they mean nothing in terms of routes. If you are an artist or aesthetic please close your eyes. The lines are an affront to a well designed new town landscape and detract from the angular design of clock tower area."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Architecture of the New Town

The Stevenage Clock Tower is a quintessential example of the architecture prevalent during the 'new town' development era of the 1970s. Its angular, modernist design reflects the optimism and forward-thinking urban planning of the time. Unlike older, more traditional landmarks, this tower represents a specific period in British architectural history, aiming to create functional and modern living spaces. TikTok

Visitors often comment on its unique aesthetic, with some appreciating its retro charm and others finding it less appealing. The surrounding town square, with its fountain, was designed to complement the tower, creating a central hub for the community. Despite some criticisms of the broader town's design, the clock tower itself is widely recognized as a significant icon of Stevenage. Reddit

Recent renovations to the town square have aimed to improve the public space, adding more seating and enhancing its usability. However, the core architectural identity of the clock tower remains a key feature that draws attention and sparks conversation about Stevenage's past and present.

Navigating the Town Square

The area surrounding the Stevenage Clock Tower has undergone recent improvements, including the addition of ample seating, making it a pleasant spot to rest. Public toilets are conveniently located nearby, and it's a major hub for bus routes, making it easily accessible for many. Reddit

However, a recurring point of feedback from visitors concerns the ground markings within the square. These lines, intended perhaps for pedestrian flow or aesthetic, have been described as confusing and potentially problematic for certain individuals. Those who are autistic, elderly, or even skaters have noted difficulties in interpreting their purpose or navigating around them effectively. Reddit

While the intention might have been to enhance the urban landscape, the execution of these markings has led to a less intuitive experience for some. It's a detail that, while minor to some, can significantly impact the comfort and ease of navigating the space for others. Being aware of this can help visitors manage their expectations and navigate the area with more care.
