Contraversial opinion: Skip Stonehenge! 40 minutes north, you’ll find Avebury Henge— a large, site of stone circles that are free to access, have no opening or closing times and where you can go right up to the stones. #stonehenge #visitstonehenge #stonehengerocks #aveburystonecircle #wiltshire #stonecircle #visitengland #england #travel #avebury #aveburyhenge #aveburystone #salisbury #glastonbur...

Stonehenge- moving the stones. How did they do it? We don't know for sure but at the visitor centre they take a guess.

🚶‍♀️ Walk the Path

The walk to the stones is scenic and often less crowded than the shuttle bus line. 🚶 Reddit

Reviews Summary

Visitors generally find Stonehenge to be an awe-inspiring and historically significant site, with the visitor centre offering excellent educational exhibits and amenities. While some feel the experience is expensive and crowded, others appreciate the well-managed facilities and the option to walk to the stones. The mystery of its construction and purpose continues to captivate.

"We enjoyed, the walk is well worth it vs the bus. We took the bus back and be ready for a large line. It does go fast though which is nice. I thought would only be an hour but we spent almost 3 hours there by choice. We really enjoyed this but is very crowded so be ready."

Dan Jones

"I visited Stonehenge for the first time many years ago before this center was built. There was a small gravel carpark and portable toilets, and we simply crossed the street to the stones. This whole setup, although well designed and educational, seems very inorganic compared to that experience, although I am sure something had to be done to manage the sheer numbers of visitors.

The exhibits were informative and educational, especially the somewhat Lifesize model of how it is believed the stones were moved and the replicas of the huts the people of the time lived in while visiting the site.

All in all, having a more modern and comfortable place to be a base for a visit is not a bad thing (Flush toilets beat port a potties any day). Having a cafe and a gift shop are nice conveniences, and the educational exhibits bring a new level of understanding to seeing the site. Be prepared to make a generous contribution to the care and maintenance of the site, but it is well worth it to see one of the oldest places in the world."

Elizabeth Johnson

"The time when we visited, cafe area was all packed and kind of busy. However, the visitor centre was clean and the small museum had all the information. Had I gone and saw all the videos in museum earlier, I wouldn’t have paid for the ticket and go there as museum had more information about its historical significance."
