It's really exciting to look in the moth trap and discover which fascinating moths have been flying that night. Let's look in the moth trap with RSPB Strumpshaw Fen who hold regular moth and butterfly discovery mornings. Moths are a variety of wacky and vivid colours that many of us never see because they are largely nocturnal insects. Here is a small selection of what was discovered at Strumpsh...

A slower pace for Saturday afternoon, an afternoon birding at RSPB Strumpshaw Fen. I joined a guided walk to help improve my basic birding skills. Fortunate enough after the walk to join the guide, Drew, on a further walk to a different hide where I was able to enjoy 6 Marsh Harriers playing at dusk. #rspb #bird #outdoors #nature #birding #birdwatching

A real unexpected treat during a trip to Strumpshaw Fen on Thursday. I knew this family of cranes were present at the reserve but with miles of redbeds I hadn’t even entertained the possibility of seeing them. So when they appeared in front of Fen hide it was a real surprise. Seeing the adults was one thing but for them to walk out into the shorter reeds, enabling everyone to catch a glimpse of t...

The well-maintained trails and hides make for an enjoyable experience, though the fen trail can get wet. Staff are noted for being helpful and polite, contributing to a highly recommended day out for nature lovers of all ages.

"Fantastic rspb nature reserve. I saw a bittern, marsh harrier, bitter, cormoranta, moorhen just at the hide at the entrance. Lovely easy and short trails. The fen trail can get a little wet depending on the time of day/year. They also do events which sound great (both for kids and adults). Highly recommend"

Viviane Lucia

"Pleasant and attractive RSPB reserve on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, with a variety of habitat including wetlands, water meadows and woodland. Not a massive reserve, so easy to walk around and spend time in for a day visit. Home to plenty of bird life, such as bittern and rare insects including the swallowtail butterfly and multitudes of dragonflies. Hides at locations overlooking the wetlands and waymarked walks all help the visitor experience."

Steve Mann

"Visited here on 5/7/25, and within a matter of minutes spotted the Swallowtail butterfly. Unfortunately, not qiuck enough to grab a photo, but we saw it😊. Also spotted a bittern in the reeds, along with Great Egrets, Marsh Harriers, Grey herons, Mute swans, numerous butterflies and other insects. Was a great day out, we took our time, and was there over 7 hours😃. The staff were very helpful, informative and polite. A very well maintained site. Thankyou!!😊"
